  6. The guest Daniel James Parsons AKA Marowak

1 -- What got you into late bays .

I have loved campervans ever since I was young. I loved the idea of having a vehicle you could drive somewhere, live in and then continue your journey the next day.

I suppose the first full blown exposure I had to Bays was at Glastonbury when I was 14 and though - these are a great idea - I want one.

I grew up with a pretty hippy attitude, I had long hair, dreams and freedom and owning a VW camper was def part of the whole deal.

When Katie and I got together I explained that I wanted a campervan - she wanted a Splitty but after going to Brighton Breeze together in 2008? I managed to convince her that Bays were the better vehicle.

2 - what is the first song you would have on your desert island and why .

For me the idea of only ever having a few songs to listen to is very difficult and it’s been hard to come up with a list.

I decided to go for a theme and have a morning – day and night song. So this is the morning one. It is what I would want to listen to every morning whilst on an island.

It is an amazing beautiful piece of music by one of my favourite bands and also the track that Katie and I played after our wedding ceremony on the beach in Costa Rica so it hold a lot of great memories for me.

    Orbital – one perfect sunrise
    one perfect sunrise - orbital

3 - do you regard yourself as a lifelong vw fanatic or are you just going through a phase in your life .

This is not a phase – I have loved VWs since Herbie. I wanted a campervan ever since I was about 14 and plan to own one until I depart this fair world.

I am looking forward to the next chapter in being a Late Bay owner and going away with Mrs Marowak and Kids on a load of adventures.

4 - next song choice and why

So – I have had ‘one perfect sunrise’ and want something I can listen to in the day. My morning and evening songs are generally ‘dance’ music so I feel I need something guitar based here.

There are LOADS of bands I love ... lots of rock (Nirvana, Pixies, Radiohead) and indie (Blur, Suede, Dodgy, Oasis, Pulp).

But I thought long and hard about this and researched through 25k tracks that I have and think this song, given the situation I would be in would be just perfect.

“We look out upon the sea, The coast is always changing,” – I currently live by the sea and love looking out across the coast, laying on the beach in the summer hearing the wave crash against the shoreline. So here it is – my day time track ....

Maximo Park – The Coast is always changing

maximo park the coast is always changing

5 - What do you do for a living at the moment .

I am currently a Project Manager at an E-learning company. I work on a number of big worldwide projects for some high profile customers and manage the implementations of their Learning Management Systems (LMS).

Project Management is rather stressful and there is not a great deal of reward in it. But I seem to be good at it and it pays the bills.

Alongside this I also have my music – which although is not my main income, does help pay the bills.

I have often thought that I would like music to be my main income, but in reality I don’t know if that is true. I would however like to move into a more creative path as I enjoy writing, making videos and editing.

Problem is that being ‘creative’ does not meet my current wage.

6 - Third and last song choice here .

The third song is always a difficult one and I had quite a few I wanted to choose. My theme for these songs was morning – day and night.

I love dance music and have enjoyed many an amazing night at festivals, gigs and raves.
There are a few bands that I could not live without – but this is the song that I believe I would listen to if someone said – this is your last night on earth – the last song you can hear.

It’s a journey – a magical epic adventure. A song I could listen to every evening before waking up and repeating the whole desert island adventure for another day.

The Chemical Brothers - The Private Psychedelic Reel
The Chemical Brothers - 11 - The Private Psychedelic Reel

7 - Do you frequent vw shows and if so which one do you enjoy the most , if not , do you intend to visit a show in the near future and which one .

I have been to a few shows – but the problem is Music is a greater passion than VWs and I would always rather go to a music festival than a VW show.

That said I have always enjoyed the shows early or late in the season. I love the Brighton Breeze (as its local and unique) and have enjoyed the likes of VoWo and Dubs in the Forest.
As always with life – If I had more time / money and no job – I would be at a lot more.

8 - Could you ever see yourself making a living from your vw passion .
    In short – No ....

9 - What one single camping item could you not do without in your van

A pen and note pad so I could write, sketch and keep myself entertained during the days.

    question

1 -- What got you into late bays .

My dad had an early red Devon when the twinkle in his eye manifested itself through the great work of Mother Nature, as a baby.

Then, when I was seven years old he bought the white Westy I now own – and (as mentioned elsewhere) 27 years later I bought it back.

Time had been unkind, things had fallen off, joints seized, its become flatulent and wheezy and struggled up hills.
Things had not gone too well for the van either.

My twin brother was and still is into Beetles – I had my dalliance with Mini’s, flirted with Ford’s, been optimistic with Opel’s and settled on my first ‘proper’ car – a 1987 Golf GTi 16v which I have owned since 1994.

So I have a little pedigree with Late Bays – but must confess to loving most old cars and motorbikes.

2 - what is the first song you would have on your desert island and why .

My favourite song by my favourite band – would heartily recommend if ever you get to see your favourite song performed your favourite band live, do it!

I love the song as it lifts me when things are tough – ‘you are in the middle of the ride’ just sounds like elation with the people that you care for, and that care for you – everything else is academic.

Jimmy Eat World - The Middle

3 - do you regard yourself as a lifelong vw fanatic or are you just going through a phase in your life .

Honest answer is am unsure – I’ll never sell the Golf, need to start using the van and plan to use it for most holidays and high days from here on in! I do do phases, but tend to be a hoarder and have a bit of OCD for keeping things original and in good nick so doubt I’d sell it.

4 next song choice and why

Reminds me of my dad. I think we all should have a song that reminds us of those passed – just a private thing.

Five For Fighting - Superman (It's Not Easy)

5 - What do you do for a living at the moment .

Stand in for Evel Kenevil – No.

Pamela Anderson’s bikini tape distribution operative – No (sadly!)

The person that put Baby in the corner – certainly Not!

Mild mannered Janitor – Could Be!!!!

Haha! I do the most plain on the wrapper job ever heard of!

Like Marowak I am a Project Manager – I own my own company and go in and consult or manage projects for other companies. I love it – it suits the pedantic part of my brain and experiencing different organisational cultures is hugely interesting to me.

Ok – you can wake up now if that’s bored you silly.

Seriously – seeing things being built, or offices moved, or people using new systems or better ways of working you have engineered is cool – also, as I move often, I don’t get dragged into the politics or the whole ‘career’ path thing.

Am happy enough doing this – don’t want to change the world as I can’t – but I would like to apply some ethics and a human element into business as I think many people at the top forget that we all come into, and leave the same way from this life.

6 Third and last song choice here .

I love Gary Lightfoot – even though most of the time he looks like he has just walked into the place and someone has told him to sing and hold a guitar! He seems genuinely happy and humble and this song has touched so many part of my life.

It also describes how I would like to traverse the hard shoulder – but the reality is there are no songs called steady walk or pseudo jog.

    Snow Patrol - Run

7 - Do you frequent vw shows and if so which one do you enjoy the most , if not , do you intend to visit a show in the near future and which one .

I went to dub freeze last year – must confess to having been conspicuous by my absence at everything else. Jetting over for shows from Monaco is such a chore after all.

Which explains why you never see Michael Schumacher at them.

I have no such excuse and will endeavour to go to shows this year and be sociable – despite the limp, hunchback and halitosis.

8 - Could you ever see yourself making a living from your vw passion .

No – not got the talent to earn more at this than I do anyway – plus I really like what I do!!

9 - what one single camping item could you not do without in your van

I would imagine it would be a far less enjoyable place sans the beds.

Now nominate the next guest from the tlb members list and your reason for nominating that person ( it may be polite to pm them first ).

Rickyroo please. I need to know more about his various female pseudonyms and the goodness that is all things brown!

  18. The guest (koolkam ) .

    question

1 -- What got you into late bays .

There was one on the street where i grew up and always liked it and when i was in school always said i was gonna get a "passion wagon" and live in it! but then i grew up and realised maybe a house is a better place to live and i could just maybe go camping now and then.

2 - what is the first song you would have on your desert island and why .

The Stone Roses - This Is The One

i choose this because i love the Stone Roses and also because this is the tune Man Utd come out of the tunnel to at Old Trafford

3 - do you regard yourself as a lifelong vw fanatic or are you just going through a phase in your life .

I hope im a lifelong VW fan, im working on the sensible one in my relationship to get a beetle but she is not having it (yet) as she says not ideal for kids (we dont have any (yet))

4 next song choice and why

    The Beatles - Rain

i choose this because i think the Beatles are responsible for so much, especially my music taste and i grew up listening to my dad play Beatles records all the time and I always think of my dad when I hear the Beatles and this is my personal favourite

5 - What do you do for a living at the moment .

Im an Aircraft Engineering Technician within the Royal Navy and have been for 14 years but i am returning to civvie street in august to claim back some of my taxes in the form of jobseekers allowance, unless anyone knows of any jobs kicking around? i must be mad as im giving up a well paid secure job to start a family (where im sure i will need more money)

6 Third and last song choice here .

    Beck - Loser

i choose this because it was the first CD i ever bought (only tapes prior to this) and it still sounds as good now as when i bought it. Also it describes me best

7 - Do you frequent vw shows and if so which one do you enjoy the most , if not , do you intend to visit a show in the near future and which one .

I have visited a few and my most enjoyable was elemental this was the 4th show id ever been to and i went on my own but left with friendships, i plan to go to more in the future but not been to any last year

8 - Could you ever see yourself making a living from your vw passion .

I would love to but dont think ive got the balls or the cash to start my own business plus i dont really know how to fix them but would love to learn, hopefully if i get a beetle i can have more of a play around as im sure whatever i get will need endless work on it

9 - what one single camping item could you not do without in your van

i camp very light and ususally just have beer and dried food (no cooking) so it would have to be something easy like sleeping bag especially in the winter :cold:

Now nominate the next guest from the tlb members list and your reason for nominating that person ( it may be polite to pm them first ).

should i nominate rickyroo or someone else before 8pm????
