1 - What got you into late bays .

I’ve been ‘into’ Beetles for years, (I was hooked as a kid with the Herbie movies) I used to drive my brothers Beetle around aged 19/20 and as I got older and a few more dollars in my pocket I bought my first Bug. The years went by and I had a family of my own that wanted to go camping, I had to sell both my Beetles at the time and was looking for a camper. I didn’t intentionally buy a late bay, (given the choice and the extra money back then I would have bought a splitty) I didn’t, but I’m rather glad as Dexter was the only late bay I went to view and I fell in love with him as soon as I turned the key. Now I wouldn’t dream of owning a split.... it’s a late bay all the way for us!

2 - what is the first song you would have on your desert island and why .

    AC/DC – Whole Lotta Rosie

My all time favourite band and I’ve picked this one as each time it reminds me of the first time I heard them. Over the years I’ve been into loads of different bands and a few different styles but AC/DC have always been the one consistent band throughout my life.

    AC/DC - Whole Lotta Rosie

3 - do you regard yourself as a lifelong vw fanatic or are you just going through a phase in your life .

Don’t know if I’d say fanatic, (although I’ve had a VW of some sort for many a year now) I like lots of classic cars, not just VW. If I was told I could never own another Volkswagen I’d be sad for a day or two for sure, but I’d get a nice little Commer/Bedford/Transit Camper and I’m sure I’d be fine eventually.

4 next song choice and why

    Prince – Let’s go crazy

I was obsessed with Prince and his music for a few years, the most talented, creative and diverse musician ever imho. I love his early stuff more (anything before Diamonds and Pearls) but it’s all been excellent!

    Prince - Let's go crazy

5 - What do you do for a living at the moment.

I’m a support worker for one of the YMCA’s homeless hostels in Norwich and I’ve previously been a Custody Officer at the local Police cells. I enjoy working with difficult people; I guess I enjoy a challenge. It might not be so financially rewarding, but I find it personally rewarding.

6 Third and last song choice here.

    Darius Rucker – This

This is perhaps my most played tune on the ipod at the moment. It’s a tad personal but I think it sums up beautifully where I am and how I now feel. For a while it was looking like as my life was becoming just one f-up after another and I was heading to nothingness, but for all the missed chances and what seemed like barriers back then, it’s all worked out for the best (thanks to my Lisa) and I’m very happy with my lot these days thankyouverymuch!

    Darius Rucker - This

7 - Do you frequent vw shows and if so which one do you enjoy the most , if not , do you intend to visit a show in the near future and which one .

We try to attend as many as possible but generally stay around East Anglia for shows like Elemental/Dubs at the Hall/Whitenoise/Alive n V-Dubbin etc but we also try to get to VW Action and Brighton Breeze when we can. Nowadays it’s all about the family for me, that’s why I tend not to do the whole big shows like BugJam or the club camping areas and stick to the family areas (we usually take along our 3 and 7 year old. The older girls, 19 and 16, don’t generally enjoy the shows)
Favourite out of the bunch has probably been VW Whitenoise the last couple of years as it’s been at Fritton Lake but I must admit to being a tad disappointed that this year it’s moved venue, I hope it’s just as good for families.

8 - Could you ever see yourself making a living from your vw passion .

Not unless someone wants to pay me for looking at VW’s and going ‘coooool’ at them.
If I had my time again, it’d be something I’d love to do and I would have studied very hard at it. Sadly though I’m too old and don’t have enough time to learn.

9 - what one single camping item could you not do without in your van

Kids toys to keep the short and shouties amused.... we seem to have a toys-r-us store tucked away in our camper!

I enjoyed that, thanks Malc. I hope all the video's work ok, i'm doing it a bit blind as we have no volume at work.... if not i'll modify when I get home :)

  3. Thanks for the invite Malc, not sure the replies are going to be as interesting as you think.

    Here goes:

What got you into late bays

It was a matter of affordability and a couple of bottles of red wine. Coincidentally we had hired a late bay a couple of years before on the isle of wight and liked the space.
When it came to buying a van for the family we had a budget and kept going to see vans and losing out on sales. The petrol money we used was included in the budget for the van so the budget was diminishing. One night i thought i had had some bad news so we popped a couple of bottles red wine and thought s*d it and bidded on a van that we hadn't had time to view and we won. The rest is history, wouldn't advise the cheap wine.

what is the first song you would have on your desert island and why?

Katrina and the waves - walking on sunshine.

Katrina & The Waves - Walking On Sunshine

The reason for this song, This was mine and Lindas first dance together at our wedding all those years ago. Didn't want to go down the traditional route of slow dancing so went straight in with this one. Whenever any of our friends hear this song we always get loads of phone calls or texts reminding us of the dance. A slow dance wouldn't have had this effect.

do you regard yourself as a lifelong vw fanatic or are you just going through a phase in your life .

My first car was an old beetle back in '87, been dabbling with others since then. Kept one in my mums garage to restore when i had time, only to find my brother had got rid of it a few years ago. Kane is already saving up for his first beetle and Linda drives a vw so not just a phase in our lives but not fanatics either.

    next song choice and why

The who - miles and miles

The WHO - I Can See For Miles (1968)

The reason for this song is, Kane took my Who collection to upload onto his ipod. He then asked if he could go and see a Who tribute band, he loved it and i hadn't seen him smile like that before. Then we went to Santa Pod, Big Bang last year and they had the same tribute band and Kane went mad at the front and sung all the words to this song.

What do you do for a living at the moment.

As little as possible. I work with Army Cadets as full time job. Am involved with the Government project to get more cadets into schools, not sure how that is going to work but the politics behind it are mind blowing. "Boring really but it pays the mortgage" i don't know for how long though as i am instatutionalised into battalion life and want to get back to a challenge. If not i will look into working in some youth organisation/charity

Third and last song choice here.

    Iggy Pop - Louie Louie

    Iggy Pop - Louie Louie

The reason for this song, when we have a get together round at our house. we always put this song on and everyone gets up and dances. it is also the song i used to have on when i used to get my blokes motivated.

Do you frequent vw shows and if so which one do you enjoy the most , if not , do you intend to visit a show in the near future and which one .

Yes we frequent as many as we can, we love the atmosphere. we intend to go to 5 this year. We liked CamperJam but due to work committments we can't go so we are going VW Whitenoise the month before. We will be going go VW Elemental, Vanjamboree, Big Bang (kane and i, boys weekend), stop over and Whitenoise, will try and go to Beck Hill if its on over August Bank Holiday. We enjoy camping at every opportunity but for us the shows give us more than just a camp site and the people are better than most of the caravan crews.

Could you ever see yourself making a living from your vw passion .

Not a hope in hell, just look at some of the threads i have started. I couldn't even get the washer jets off with out help, my lastest adventure is to try and get the crank pulley nut off and it ain't budging. My greatest conquests have been to fit a hot start relay and change all the locks.
If any one needs an apprentice and is prepared to pay my mortgage, i may consider changing the reply.

what one single camping item could you not do without in your van

The rock and roll bed. Simply because i can start a fire (any where) and it has a cooker installed, i can catch my own food, the van has a solid roof, so no need for a tent, awning or shelter. I am a right grumpy old git (or so i have been told) when i haven't had a good nights sleep so to help everyone else it would be the bed.

Not very interesting at all and i don't even know if i have put the videos in right.

Will think about who to nominate next.
