  1. The guest (robyip ) .

    question

1 -- What got you into late bays .

Bek did!!! And It's been love hate ever since. I love driving it, camping in it and the smiles on people faces when driving about in it. I hate having to fix stuff on it but only because I'm a newbie to car mechanics and I'm out of my depth and usually fixing thing don't come cheap and I'm already a busy chap.

2 - what is the first song you would have on your desert island and why .

Adele "To Make You Feel My Love" I know Bob Dylan wrote it originally but I've only ever heard this version and it really moves me when I hear it. Love is important to my life and things start going wrong when love isn't in our life.

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=iPIP0tieWWI#!

3 - do you regard yourself as a lifelong vw fanatic or are you just going through a phase in your life .

No because I only started thinking about owning one when Bek told me about her dreams off owning one about 2 years ago and because of the impact it's had our and the boys life I can't see Alex going away too soon.

4 next song choice and why

I love the lyric "I've got soul but I'm not a soldier!"

The Killers - All These Things That I've Done

5 - What do you do for a living at the moment .

Currently I work for the kingsfoundation as an IT Developer (that's my official job title) but I can be a system administrator, desktop support engineer, database administrator, database developer, web application developer or voip administrator at any point of my week. I won't say anymore because most people would start making excuses to leave at this point!

6 Third and last song choice here .

When I hear this it brings back vivid memories of a really happy time in my childhood.

Eva Cassidy - Fields of Gold

7 - Do you frequent vw shows and if so which one do you enjoy the most , if not , do you intend to visit a show in the near future and which one .

We loved CamperJam last year because it was family friendly, chilled and the people we met from TLB and in general were really nice. We went to one other VW show at the Newark show ground a year before and it was ok but wouldn't do it again. We would like to go to other VW shows but it's fitting it in with other stuff we do and cost.

8 - Could you ever see yourself making a living from your vw passion .

Not really too many other people do it and I enjoy my current way of making living.

9 - what one single camping item could you not do without in your van

An axe! You always need wood to burn and I've often found them to be rather large to start with.

Well I just got an invite to be a guest, I hadn't looked at this thread until this morning and now I've just spent a couple of hours reading from page one. There are some fantastic song choices so far and I've only read up to page 6 at the moment.
I love the image of Poptop gathering all his unruly children together and telling us what to do. Reminds me of Joyce Grenfell

That should keep you occupied until I get round to doing my iinterview

    question

1 -- What got you into late bays .

Well at the tender age of 17 I bought my first beetle, more as a car that I could do up, as I was on a limited budget and the second hand car market was very buoyant back then... I really got into VWs when I went to my first show (big bang '98) and saw everyone else in the scene, and felt the camaraderie!!
A couple of years later I bought my first LB, a 77 dormobile for the princely sum of £400... it needed a hell of a lot of work, had been faked up with filler before the guy I bought it off had bought it, and once it started blowing through he had just parked it up in a field... I came along 2 years later and the bus became mine

2 - what is the first song you would have on your desert island and why .

3 - do you regard yourself as a lifelong vw fanatic or are you just going through a phase in your life .

Absolutely life long... for instance at the moment I currently have 2 LBs, 2 beetles, and 2 mk2 golfs that are mine... in the workshop there's a LB and a 51 bug both under restoration

4 next song choice and why

    http://youtu.be/uHBMDRJpxWQ

5 - What do you do for a living at the moment .

Currently I have 3 jobs... Part time dub restorer, part time labourer, part time shelf stacker

6 Third and last song choice here .

    http://youtu.be/0fY8bHc53qY

7 - Do you frequent vw shows and if so which one do you enjoy the most , if not , do you intend to visit a show in the near future and which one .

I usually try to get to some of the smaller shows, but being up in the borders makes driving times interesting!! ;)

But I normally aim to go to volksworld, and dubfreeze and a couple of others... main aim is to start going to a couple of european shows

8 - Could you ever see yourself making a living from your vw passion .

I do a little bit at the moment, Ideally I'd like to build (performance) engines full time!! But I do like doing full on restos too!! :)

9 - what one single camping item could you not do without in your van

Bed - home is where you park it ;)

Now nominate the next guest from the tlb members list and your reason for nominating that person ( it may be polite to pm them first ).

  8. The guest ( Outlaw ) .

    question

1 -- What got you into late bays .

I have always been a Hot Rodder / Drag Racer but always admired Vw Scene - I gave up Racing to damm old and to expensive I can not sit still so a bus was my next on my list of things to do - but with a Hot rod twist

2 - what is the first song you would have on your desert island and why .

weather in you - it makes me smile and think of the summer
Crowded House - Weather With You

3 - do you regard yourself as a lifelong vw fanatic or are you just going through a phase in your life .

I have always admired Vw my soul lays with Hot Rodding - so each bus I build will get progressivly more radical

4 next song choice and why

    Clocks by Cold Play
    Coldplay - Clocks

5 - What do you do for a living at the moment .

    Green Flag Technician

6 Third and last song choice here .

Started off with nothing still have most of it left - seasick steve Seasick Steve--- LIVE ON LATER WITH JOOLS - I STARTED OUT WITH NOTHIN'

7 - Do you frequent vw shows and if so which one do you enjoy the most , if not , do you intend to visit a show in the near future and which one .

I will not go to shows until Gladys is finished

8 - Could you ever see yourself making a living from your vw passion .

I would love to combine Vw bus work and Hot Rod fabrication

9 - what one single camping item could you not do without in your van

    Cider and lots of it

    question

1 -- What got you into late bays .

As a young un, my grandparents had a nice westfalia t25 and would go off for weeks on end in it. I thought that would be great. When i was about 10, My dad and I borrowed it to go to Santa pod for the weekend and I had a fantastic time. Had a couple of beetles, still got a 69. We (wife and I) have always gone camping, so the obvious upgrade was a camper, enter the 74 late bay we have now.

2 - what is the first song you would have on your desert island and why .

This is our wedding song and I think it's great. Brings a tear of happines every time i hear it. Makes me think how lucky I am to be married to such a fantastic, fun and beautifull woman!! Love ya Trudy xx
    Chakka khan--ain't no body
Chaka Khan (Ain't Nobody) rare 80's performance

3 - do you regard yourself as a lifelong vw fanatic or are you just going through a phase in your life .

Not a lifelong fanatic but always liked them. Used to be in to my fast fords, xr3's and rs series cars. Also love my motorbikes, anything with 2 wheels. On the other hand it's defiantly not a phase, as I say got a 69 beetle and I dont think we will ever be without a camper.

4 next song choice and why

This one hits hard for me. My dad committed suicide nearly 11 years ago. We will never know why but I guess he had his reasons, and I miss him every day. This track makes me think that I never want to put my family or friends through the pain and suffering i went through and still do to this day, and I guess it reminds me of the great people I have around me.
    Rip dad, love ya x

5 - What do you do for a living at the moment .

I'm a field engineer for sky tv. Basically I'm the dude who bolts dishes to walls, fixes broken sky boxes and broadband and gives general advice. I (most of the time) really enjoy my job. I'm left to do my own thing, meet some great people and some oddballs too. Oh and I get free sky O0

6 Third and last song choice here .

Put simply, this is probably the best hip hop track ever!! (although if I could get rappers delight mixed on to the end, that would be perfect)
    Dr dre--still dre

7 - Do you frequent vw shows and if so which one do you enjoy the most , if not , do you intend to visit a show in the near future and which one .

We have been to a few vw shows and had good time at them and met some fantastic people/characters. Really enjoyed Skeg-Vegas and a small one, more of just a gathering, Scarborough breeze. Will definitely get to more this year, but also enjoy, just as much, getting away camping somewhere quiet and peaceful with Trudy and our dog.

8 - Could you ever see yourself making a living from your vw passion .

I'd love to do resto work as a job, but i dont think my skills are good enough and I don't have the cash to do it. Good luck to anyone who does.

9 - what one single camping item could you not do without in your van

Erm, probably couldn't make do without drink, of any type (booze would be my first choice and tea would probably be trudys, the dog is happy with water)

1 -- What got you into late bays .

I'd thought about buying a van a few times but not seriously because I didn't have the money. Then last year I decided to spend my redundancy money on a van. Looked about a bit, and then in a moment of pure madness bought a van on ebay 5 hours before flying out the country and I hadn't even seen it. Came back a week later to collect Gavin, now known as Gavin the Smurf Bus.

Since then I keep looking a vw pick ups and karmann ghias, just need a new house with a big drive and garage so I can buy them :)

2 - what is the first song you would have on your desert island and why .

My first song choice goes back to school days and school discos. In 1992 I met Graham at a school disco, he strangled me and I fell in love!! Anyway we're still happily married and if we had a song it would be Nirvana - Smells Like Teen Spirit.

Many a memory of jumping about and head banging. ;D

Nirvana - Smells Like Teen Spirit

3 - do you regard yourself as a lifelong vw fanatic or are you just going through a phase in your life .

I'm not a lifelong fanatic but now I have a van I can't imagine not having it. I spend all my spare time deciding what to fix or add to it next.

4 next song choice and why

My next song is my favourite Singstar song, I'm not a great singer but I really love singing this. Not your usual karaoke song but the type you can sing really loud.

    The Killers - Mr. Brightside

5 - What do you do for a living at the moment .

I work for a company that makes massive generators, the type that go on boats, big vehicles or act as back up in hospitals etc. Its my job to do the financial reporting and forecasting and to provide support to the business. Get to travel a bit which is nice. Been the US and Norway a couple of times last year.

6 Third and last song choice here .

Ok, I think it's time for a bit of cheesey music.

This song brings back memories of university. My flatmate fancied another guy and she would stare across the room at him. He wasn't interested at all but the way she looked at him always made us think of this song which we'd sit humming loudly. This is also a song I love to sing to Graham and I do it badly on purpose. I love to see him squirm when a I screech the lyrics :))

    Carpenters Close To You

7 - Do you frequent vw shows and if so which one do you enjoy the most , if not , do you intend to visit a show in the near future and which one .

I've only been to Bus Freeze and VW Action but I'm planning on going to a few this year. Looking forward to Elemental and Camperjam and hoping for amazing weather.

Bus Freeze was the first time I met up with fellow Late Bayers. For those of us there, we have fond memories of the security guard and his stolen chair, gnome music, TLB Burger van and perhaps not so fond memories of the toxic wood and the lack of cheesy chips.

The best bit of shows are getting together with other Late Bayers and having a laugh so I'm well excited about Spring Camp and TLB on the Farm (not far to travel for me!)

8 - Could you ever see yourself making a living from your vw passion .

I get paid too well for what I do. As long as my job pays for my newly found vw passion then I'm happy.

9 - what one single camping item could you not do without in your van

I'm sure nearly everyone agrees, its got to be a kettle. Without it you can't have a brew or make a pot noodle.

    question

1 -- What got you into late bays .

My Dad was a car dealer and when I was 3 years old he bought home a magnolia split oval and I was in love and cried for ages when he sold it, a few years later an jaffa Westy appeared on the drive which his twin brother bought and we actually travelled around Europe in it when I was 14yrs old. The rest is history and at the age of 19 I bought my 1st beetle and customised it so it was Cal Look with a MASSIVE sound system. I kept my bug until 2000 when it was stolen by my Ex as he knew it would be a good way to get at me. I also owned a 1971 twin slider with a Ford Cosworth engine which was amazing fun but alas he stole that also.

I now have the most amazing Fiancé who is also into VW's (we met through another VW forum) and he spoils me by buying me awesome presents for my bus like - Porsche wheels and US Spec bumpers, what more could a girl ask for!!

2 - what is the first song you would have on your desert island and why .

The song title is kinda ironic given the question title ha ha

Pink Floyd - Wish You Were Here

We used to perform this song in my 1st band when I was @ 16yrs old and going through a really tough time. The lyrics really touched me and I often play this song to remind me just how far I have travelled emotionally and spiritually through all the lessons that life has given me.

3 - do you regard yourself as a lifelong vw fanatic or are you just going through a phase in your life .

I couldn't imagine life without a VW

I have owned various VW's over a 21 yr period and my 2 kids have grown up going on holidays and to 100's of shows all over the country. Most of my friends are who I have met at VW shows, meets etc and i hope to eventually camp with some of you guys and make new friends and memories too.

4 next song choice and why

I guess I have chosen this song as it reminds me of the birth of my daughter and such a monumental change in my life and was the only song that I could sing to her and get her to sleep lol

    Beverly Craven - Memories

5 - What do you do for a living at the moment .

I studied at college to become a Vehicle Restorer but a spinal/back injury returned whixh meant I had to rethink and being as cars and teaching have always been a major factor in my life I decided to combine them both so I'm studying to be a Driving Instructor and in between studying I work at a friends music studio writing, singing and performing.

6 Third and last song choice here .

Choosing just 3 songs has been TORTURE for me !!

The lyrics in this song sum up my life and being a raver and a serious D n B head I had to post at least one song choice relating to my life long passion with music.

Please crank up the volume on your PC's for this one !!

    Pendulum - Sounds Of Life

It seems like you're waiting for nothing,
Looks like time had deleted it all,
It may be everything that could have been was thrown away,
So just take what is left, don't somehow fill the space,
When I can see through it, oh I feel safe again,
    I feel warmer...

    [Chorus]
    Sounds of life outside
    Why do I retire
    Sounds of life outside
    One by one...
    Got nothing to hide
    One by one

Couldn't have seen it come, from an inch away,
But it's here, right on time,
Wait for the flash of grey and we will feel the same,
If we can just drift for a while,
When I'm back on the ground I feel safe again,
    I feel warmer...

    Sounds of life outside
    Why do I retire
    Sounds of life outside
    One by one...
    Got nothing to hide

    Sounds of life outside
    Why do I retire
    Sounds of life outside
    One by one...
    Got nothing to hide
    One by one.

7 - Do you frequent vw shows and if so which one do you enjoy the most , if not , do you intend to visit a show in the near future and which one .

I have lost count of the amount of shows that I have been to since the early 90's. Before I had kids it had to be either Bug Jam or the No Worries Beetle Bash. Since having kids it was Peppercorn (also their favourite show). Elemental has an amazing vibe. BattlesBridge as it is my local show. Last year was the 1st Grill n Chill and I have got to say that it was a real old skool show and I loved it !But with so many shows and they all have their own uniqueness we are just spoiled for choice now.

8 - Could you ever see yourself making a living from your vw passion .

We have enough work with our 4 buses as it is and now my daughter wants a Beetle! if I get spare time i have been known to give welding lessons and teach body work to those that need it.

9 - what one single camping item could you not do without in your van

    My stereo !! I couldn't handle a day without music :(

  17. Zed

    Zed Gradually getting grumpier

I've been nominated a couple of times so I thought I'd better knuckle down. Now I read this thread it's great and I've listened to everyones songs and read their stuff and like Malc been quite suprised in a nice way, so here we go.

    The guest (Zed) .

    question

1 -- What got you into late bays .

We got very wet camping 20 years ago and the airbed kept going down so we abandoned our frame tent and bought a Westy late bay because that's what out dry mate had - his kids were tucked here and there in a glow of dry warmth and we were bedraggled and fed up. So was another mate and his family in a tent. It was BAD with water running through the tents and 5 kids under 5 between us. This was whitsun. By Aug bank holiday there were 3x 73 westy continentals going camping. 8) Got to remember they were really cheap back then because they are so crap. £1500 got a peachy complete one in the condition US imports are now.

2 - This is my first song. My lovely mum died 18 months ago-ish. I loved my mum, like men do! It's a happy song and I'm all for happiness.
    Prince Nico Mbarga Sweet Mother

3 - do you regard yourself as a lifelong vw fanatic or are you just going through a phase in your life.

It's just a phase. Crappy things.

4 next song choice and why

This one neatly sums up my marriage breakdown and where I find myself now. I'm the one that stayed not ran away.

Foo Fighters - Times Like These

5 - What do you do for a living at the moment .

I think we all know that...

6 Third and last song choice here .

I'm going to have to cheat and put in two here. This one I just love. Lee Scratch Perry - nutty as a fruitcake, but how creative can you get. :) Listening to this song just puts everything neatly in it's place - you dig?
The Upsetters ~ Waap You Waa

And this one because I might be a grufty old git but I'm a romantic at heart.
The Beltones - No More Heartache

7 - Do you frequent vw shows and if so which one do you enjoy the most , if not , do you intend to visit a show in the near future and which one .

Certainly not - they are for sheep with roof racks and vintage coolers. I go camping, with friends. :)

8 - Could you ever see yourself making a living from your vw passion .

Thought so, but not so sure now. TBH I couldn't think of anything else that didn't involve getting a proper job and having worked for myself for 20 years I just couldn't face that so I'm stuck with it. Could be worse.

9 - what one single camping item could you not do without in your van.

    Drugs?
OK I'm cheating, but this one for being a dab hand in thinking out loud. Shaun Ryder - great bloke.
bob's yer uncle ~ happy mondays (original version)
