  4. i try and run two 4 milers and a 7 miler then build that up over 3 weeks to two 6 milers and a 10 miler then drop it down the week before to two 2 milers and a 4 miler then do the 13 miler (race day)

when i do the 10 miler i will prob end up doing 11/12 lol

my main issue is that i need to get more time in the gym doing weights, i enjoy running but hate weights

Just done 6 miles treadmill run. Come on out there - who's still doing a bit? ;)

  7. Only been once this week so far so will be out again tomorrow for a longer run. I don't mind running in a bit of rain but it keeps tipping it down just when I'm about to go out.

  8. really need to go this morning but cant find the energy and my bed looks sooooo warm

  12. I finally found the courage to ditch the treadmill and started running around our local fishing lakes and I really enjoyed it but found the cold air in my throat and lungs unbearable so I've got myself a scarf to wrap around my mouth, does anyone else struggle with this?

I found it much easier running outside than on the treadmill but have had really painful ankles which my friend thinks I might have shin splints, has anyone suffered with these?

Sorry for all the questions but I'm a virgin runner >:D

Running in the cold can effect your breathing - just makes me cough at the end.

Shin splints do affect the shins and not the ankles - could be an issue with the trainers you are wearing - are they proper running ones?

  14. I guess I will try out the scarf and persevere. I think I find it more noticeable as I've only ever ran in the warmth lol

I wear Nike Shox for running and aerobics. The pain starts from the inside of my ankles and travels up my legs. I didn't want up go to the Doctors as the pain subsides after a day or two of resting. I figured it's probably because I'm not used to running on hard surfaces.

I have had most running injuries over the years and read a boring amount of stuff about prevention etc.

www.runnersworld.co.uk is a good place for advice on shoes and injuries.

Don't increase your mileage by more that 10% a week is a good guide. What I would also do, if possible, is get to a proper running shop where they can do gait analysis on a treadmill (which they do free) and make sure you have the right amount of support in your shoes. For some reason Nike are frowned upon as running shoe makers, but they may be fine :)

After a run, if it's sore, apply ice . Also, make sure that you are stretching before and after.

  16. I reckon its the trainers that are causing the problem. People run different ways and trainers can be bought to suit.
Near me is a running shop that puts you on a treadmill and they record your running technique, they then find trainers to suit you. Made a big difference to me. Probably worth looking for a shop near you with a similar service.

    ^^^^ great minds :)

  18. Thanks for both of your replies and info 8)

I can't think of any sports shops locally that provide that service but I will go online and source one. I'm really getting into running and I don't want to have to stop before I've really got started

I will go and check out that running site too.

    Cheers guys 8)

  19. well done for getting out and about easigee, i find it so much better when there are thing to look at rather than whatever is infront of the treadmill

for just training you want the most cushion as possible in a trainer the advice below is bang on the shops can set up trainers with bars in the sole to help you run correctly if you run on the outside of your foot for example the bar will help you land more even, but they come at a price probably around £80 + i had a pair of Nikes of the shelf that cost me £60ish and hurt like hell, now i run in asics half the price its just finding the right pair for you

as for the scarf how about something like this?

    http://www.gooutdoors.co.uk/fordville-mens-neck-scarf-p108030

it says its a "mens" but what the difference is i have no idea

  20. I think the trainers along with the shock of running to my body are key to my problems >:D

Thanks for posting the scarf link as it has given me the idea of crocheting one similar ;D
