The public sector strikes

    Tuesday wildchild I'm a circle!

I am drinking it as going upstairs is to much effort. :)

  2. For or against, the bottom line is we live in a world full of corruption, governed by corrupt goverments and nothing will ever change that

  3. Unfortunately, when you think about it, in the end we get the Government we deserve. None of us want to pay more tax or to cut any services. With elections every 5 years, we (the electorate) demand quick fixes and get unrealistic promises from our Governments. Historically, as soon as public finances are in surplus, instead of paying off debt, successive Governments give away and / or spend the excess because they want to get re-elected. Whose fault is it really?

  5. I'm a public sector worker who is not allowed to strike, respect to Wilma's etc... I have lots to say but not getting sucked in I'll end up ranting ;)

  6. I don't want to get sucked in too. And don't get me wrong, the Public Sector generally provides a fantastic service. But as one who runs a business, my feeling is that the Public Sector don't realise how lucky they've got it (compared to Private Sector pensions). And exactly what are the strikes going to achieve? Are they blind to the crisis which affects the whole world right now? Are they blind to the fact that EVERYONE is suffering, not just Public Sector workers? Perhaps they think money grows on trees? Get real. There simply isn't the cash available.

If they don't like the conditions they should quit and set up their own businesses. That's going to be part of the forced solution anyway. You can't avoid it. The Public sector has no choice but to shrink, because tax revenue generated from the Private simply can't support it anymore. In fact, it hasn't been able to support it for years, which is one of the reasons why the UK's in such a mess right now. I run an accountancy practice dedicated to small businesses and let me tell you my firm is expanding quite considerably, because the number of folk sticking their necks out, taking a risk and setting up their own businesses is growing. Most of them had no other option. It's a sign of the times. And good on 'em.

I work in the private sector. In the last 3 years, they've increased our contributions and guaranteed that the link to Final Salary would remain. 6 months ago that link was severed and an RPI link imposed.
    Can I strike? No.
    Would I want to? No.
Can I appreciate that this is necessary for the future of our economy / business? Yes.

It does make me chuckle that Public Sector employees seem to be under the mis-guided impression that they are singularly being punished.
Wake up and smell the coffee folks, we're all in this together (except of course the Private Sector just accept it and carry on)

  11. I work in the private sector, get paid no more than the equivalent public sector position, do not get a big bonus, cannot afford a private pension and get no let off's by the government in tax to compensate the fact I don't have a public sector pension. With the current state of the country everyone should accept something has to be done and taking the view of everyone else should cover me even though they are actually in the same position is just wrong. Why should my tax go up to cover the private sector pension, tax already pays the salaries and from a few people I have heard from the public sector is a lot easier work than the private. Jobs were created to get the unemployment figures down (I except in some circumstances this isnt the case nurses/police/teaching etc), one example is friend who worked at a job centre, she had 4 management levels above her. That doesnt happen in the private sector unless those positions are needed.

Bottom line, when life is getting harder due to inflation etc, I agree we should all be bit worse off now rather than totally skint in a few years.

And why should my tax pay for your easy life without you making more of a contribution.....

  12. Cut the foreign aid budget and all of a sudden a lot of money becomes available.

  16. Not being and have never been in public sector, but can I ask what the general age is for a public sector person to retire or become eligible for their pension ? lets take the police as an example, do they not get their pension after 20 years ? I doubt there are many people in the private sector that would have enough in their pension funds to retire anywhere near as early as those in public sector roles, so maybe this is just bringing the public sector in line with the rest of us poorer off people that have to provide for ourselves....no expert, but that's my feelings on this.....;-)
