The public sector strikes

Surestart was set up to help underprivileged kids get a good start in life, and low earners get cheap childcare, its not worked, the underprivileged kids are sat at home while their mums watch jeremy kyle and the surestart places are filled with middleclass kids who's mums work and are getting cheap childcare, every morning at ours near me 4 x 4's, bmw's and mercs pull up and drop their kids off, its not working for the people it was intended for, again at our expense, its a great idea if it was run right, no offence to michelle but this was another quango to provide jobs, we have loads of them where jobs were made up at tax payers cost and now the money has gone

I thought that they ended up doing socio-economic screening (does anyone in your house work, do you have a garden, do you watch Jeremy Kyle?) type of thing to keep the chattering classes out?

Can't help thinking that's more of an excuse for the strike rather than a genuine reason.

The roads were busier than ever yesterday morning. All the civil servants going into the city centre for a day Xmas shopping on payday. That showed everyone

Something must be going right in this country and the local councils are trying their best, they are paying the 2 families living in my houses rents and they both drive cars less than 2 years old (one brand new as of this week) oddly though, neither of them works ! Yet here I am doing 65 hours a week and no new car...... Oh well, maybe if I strike I can get a pension to match the spongers..... Oh wait, I'm self employed, I get nowt..... Anyone know of any public sector jobs going, I need a holiday and pension of any description

Probably not, but would you want a 75 year old project managing your multi million pound project?
With an ever increasing life expectancy its a very real prospect, and theres not a lot we can do about it.
The difference is some of us decide to just man-up and get on with it, others dont.

the life expectancy of a working class male in this country is 79 years, for women it is slightly longer at 82 years. We work into our 70's and most of us will "enjoy" between 11 and 14 years before we are dead or too senile to know where we are.Whoop! don't spend it all at once guys!!

I propose we give all those who have worked hard all their lives a decent pension in old age. That's it really. pensioner poverty is endemic in this country and this is a disgrace.

I agree but it costs more in running the overbloated bureaucratic social services than they give out in pensions, cut out the fat and get in the real world and we'd all have more money

I'd propose people worked hard and earnt a decent pension. That's what I intend to do anyway and if the goalposts move (link to final salary) then I'll just work harder.

I was on strike today. It's not just the [glow=red,2,300]FACT[/glow] that we're going to have to pay more, work longer and get less pension at the end of it, but also some of the contributions that I will be paying go towards plugging the hole in the treasury finances caused by bailing out the banks.

So some bankers mess up, and get bailed out, and are now back to paying themselves obscenely large bonuses again (the like of which I will never see in the public sector) and public sector workers will have to pay for it. Because of course it was our fault, right?

I'm well aware that the government likes to engage in divide and rule, and therefore the standard way of portraying the public sector is cushy jobs on big pensions, but I am in favour of everyone having a decent pension, public or private sector. It should not be a race to the bottom. If you work all your life, you should be able to rely on some sort of decent pension in your retirement.

The BBC is dong a lot of stuff on tax at the moment, including a chart showing tax paid vs. what you get out for each decile (1/10th) of households in the country. In [glow=red,2,300]FACT[/glow], the crossover point between taking and giving is around 65% of households, so rather more takers than givers.
