    Good run Mike .

  2. Could just be as simple as stale fuel from him sitting in Alex's yard all that time?

Seems to me when I set the mixtures after a 15 mile drive to warm it up, I end up doing it again after a 30 mile drive. Then it's right. I was just hinting at that really. There's warmed up and there's thoroughly warmed up. How much time would he think that was worth? You'll soon learn how to stop any popping at idle by adjusting the mixtures yourself. It's not something that needs doing all the time but you need to know how. If it's popping on deceleration I disagree with Mike. It should not unless it's got some racey cam which it hasn't has it? There are a few reasons it might though. For example mine did because... the tailpipe was too big dia. There are two on mine, I blocked one up and it's still bigger than stock so... no popping now. Like Mike my AFR goes off the scale lean engine braking, but mine doesn't pop. ;) Just an example. There's always a cause and a prevention IMO.

There wasn't much fuel in the tank, so the first thing I did when I collected him was fill up, so unfortunately not the answer I don't think. I'd done a few miles since then before yesterdays run into Salisbury, albeit only a few at a time.

Granted, the set up probably hasn't been done after a 15-30 mile drive (although I can't say for sure) - Alex's test run seems to be about 5 miles whenever we go out for a test drive.
I'm not sure if it's popping on deceleration, I only noticed it when I parked up yesterday and thought to let it idle so I could have a look in the back to see everything running- usually I'd have just turned the engine off before I got out. I'll go for another run when I get a chance (probably next weekend) and have a better listen when I'm driving and decelerating.
The exhaust isn't anything special, a quiet pack bought off Sam Hodson last year, and one I think quite commonly run by a lot of folk on here. And unlikely to be a racy cam from TES!
It would be nice to know how to adjust the mixtures myself, so I will endeavour to learn once it's all set up properly.

I've messaged Alex, and it has to go back down to him at some point anyway to finish off a couple of little bits, so I'll make sure it's nice and warm when I arrive and we can tweak the mixture straight away.

    Thanks :)

The other really annoying thing that does happen is that the idle jets can be part blocked by small bits of rubber lying around inside fuel hoses - e.g. crumbs left over from cutting the hose or pushing it onto some union. So you take out the carbs, clean them out, disturb some dirt, drive ten miles, idle jet half blocks .. repeat..

Without an air fuel ratio gauge or a proper rolling road setup, its a bit less precise over whats going on - its best if somebody equipped with measurement gear checks it - either via using an AFR meter, or visiting a rolling road where they have AFR gauges as part of the rolling road kit.

When my progressive was trying to kill my engine recently, no pops, crackles or anything, just the air fuel ratio gauge was tipping over towards leaner , and the cylinder head temperature gauge starting to warm rapidly going up a slight hill. Normally it goes back over to 12.5:1 which is slightly richer.. The first time that happened, it just happened I pulled in for a scheduled stop, the second time was yellow taxi time, the third time I caught it happening on the way back from Volksworld, slowed down a lot and it recovered . .

  8. Scrubbed the mould off his roof (again), two pumps on the pedal, fired up first time. Took him shopping, went for a blast up the motorway

Where I am going, I dont need carburettor jets, or worn out Italian hardware.

The progressive was new to me less worn, all the bits I could wiggle on the bench were moving properly, but it was the bits that stopped wiggling when it got warmer that seem to have been the issue. Anyway I did the standard modification to remove the feature that only works properly on a 2.8 litre Ford Granada... .

And I still have a working choke .

Managed to get a ball joint half out of the suspension arm with one of those eBay ball joint kits, a collection of varied but incorrectly dimensioned bits of mild steel. There are tubes which are basically 2mm too large in diameter...
Parts of the kit are flowing under the pressure , the whole thing bends like crazy but the ball joint drops down twice then stops.. maybe hitting some random part of the kit.

I can however push the ball joint back up into the suspension arm, two bangs and its back, so if I fail again tomorrow, its out with the angle grinder. It has to be in place so you can take the top off the balljoint easily with a cutting disc, then cut through the ring of steel that remains with some other implement, probably a Dremel with a carbide burr.

Got the fridge out of storage, cleaned it down and plugged it in to chill for the coming weekend.

Popped the leisure battery on charge, tomorrow will top up the starter battery.

    Hid some beer too :D

Exactly. Then forget if you wish, I haven't adjusted mine for years. AFR readings same as ever. Never blown up an engine.
It's not rocket science if your carburation choice is suitable. Mike's carb is too big even for my engine.
