But the originals do still function as intended given some TLC .

Ordered some new front discs, pads, backing plates and a set of four Goodridge steel braided flexi brake hoses from Heritage Parts, the latebay discount code saved me £25..
It was after I looked at the grooves and the wear on the discs, the rubbing and rusty and bent backing plates , the rubber flexi hose, and thought .. this could be better.

Started him for the first time since the new year. Took three good cranks for the carbs fill and about five minutes for the chokes to come off.
    Settled down nicely.
Neighbours thought I was mowing the lawn!

For the first time this year, now that the salt has gone for now, shock horror I actually went for a drive!
She fired straight away but was reluctant to catch on all four. As far as I can gather from this board my twin Webers have no chokes so I have to be patient. Once she had warmed up off we went. All worked as normal but I do have a hanging idle once she is hot.

A touch on the linkage and it drops to what sound like normal, I needed to hear other vans I think, but possibly something in the linkage is binding slightly. On the other hand if I get it too low then it might become a pig to start. Maybe I need someone with experience of air cooled VWs to take a look.

Yes sounds like they don't return fully. It would be silly to adjust the idle speed to compensate.

There is a trick to pushing down on the ends of the clips in the bulb holders, they re-develop the bend they need to be springy..

  15. That sealant isn’t a good idea soggz fella
You need one that any excess dissolves in the oil
The type you have will make little worms of sealant that can block up oil galleries.

Tell him to bring a big eff-off breaker bar with him to get the caliper bolts off with...
