Noisy...oh yes. If it's like mine it'll die with a whiff of burning electricalness in a couple of years.

  2. Did you fix yours straight to the floor?
Any idea why yours burnt out? Water get in?

In the end it was just fixed to the tube. Condensation perhaps, it started to sound rusty if you know what I mean, the speed became sporadic and then it stopped with a wisp of smoke. If I take it out for a look there will be a gap and the windscreen demists eventually. I'm waiting patiently for someone to recommend a quiet one. A 12v bathroom extractor fan might be the ticket.

  4. Suppose it’s not a lot worse than the fan on a ‘proper’ car and it definitely works better than the snail fan.
If it does die think I’ll investigate one from a car.

Putting hot air through fans with the motor in the air flow means the sintered bearings will dry out and sieze. Try snail blower style fans with motors on the outside.. I am considering a steel CH boiler blower fan fitted with a 12 volt motor.

I note the original and first replacement fan had sintered bearings, the second replacement has ball bearing races.

  6. So would it help if they were mounted in engine bay instead of snail fan, to push cooler air rather than pull hot air?

A T4 engine already has the correct electric fan, with a fairly powerful motor. Again, its say 100 watts.

Hanging on the end of the engine is a fan delivering probably more like 1000 watts of air flow, although most of that cools the engine, the electric fan gets blocked off once the engine comes off idle.

So the need is assistance at low speed, not to replace the more powerful engine fan.

In terms of layout its easier on a T1 to fit the fan under the van as the fan housing gets in the way over the engine.

What we need is a fan where it is shaft driven so the motor stays cool outside the hot air, and the impeller runs inside the ducting.

The trouble with snail fans is they have to be quite big to not block air flow when the motor is off. They are also designed to provide air flow at reasonable pressure - through cooling fins - rather than move large volumes of air at low pressure out of the holes in the dash.
The plastic bilge blower style is better in that respect as the path through the fan is straight, we just need it made of slightly more heat resistant material and have the motor kept cooler.

Unloaded months of crap from inside it, including but not limited to a tumble dryer and tool boxes.
Loaded it up with an inordinate amount of stuff to go camping.
    Happy days!

Gave it a service and fitted the new silicone rocker cover gaskets I’ve had for over a year.
Doing a car treasure hunt in it on Sunday

Brought him back from 3 1/2 months isolation and washed off the tree sap and started to ‘air’ him out.

  20. Put another rocker cover gasket on the side that had the dribble. Then took her for a spin up thru Auchtermuckty and the Fife tourist route and adjusted front shocks :)
