  1. Opppps double post

  2. Agreed...

The EGR insert is on a M8x1.25 thread (IIRC) so helicoiling it should be pretty straight forward!!

Does look like it's time to pull the motor and do oil seals and have a bit of a degreasing session!! :)

  3. Yep I think your right I might put a days holiday in this week and have it out is it doable on my own or would a extra pair of hands be better i can handle a type 1 on my own but I've heard type 4 are a lot heavier ?

  4. yeah, type 4s come in at around 120kg, type 1s are around 80kg!!

Also the sump has a curve to it, so taking it out on a trolley jack can be interesting!!

Allow yourself 3 days, as you'll need to pull the head to do the helicoils really... stops any swarf getting anywhere it shouldn't!!

  5. Was going to give myself the day just to drop it and clean up

  6. Will be a long day dude!!

I'd have a friday off work... gives you the weekend for fettling then

  7. Won't be going near it at the

  8. Typo won't be going near at weekend it's my birthday sat-day and I will be ill on Sunday ;)

  9. LOL :D

  10. right day off work tomorrow is there anything i should be aware of when removing the engine ?
is it more or less the same as a t1 engine in regards to removing :)

  11. It should be the same fella, not auto so should be fine.

    More rather than less.
After disconnecting the usual stuff, you can get it in and out in one piece by just taking off the plastic part of the oil filler. You have to remove the two bolts gearbox/rear carrier and pivot the whole lot down a bit on the front gearbox mount, catch the gearbox on something, then undo the 4 bolts and pull off the engine. If you need to move the van support the gearbox on chain or rope - it's not very heavy.

It you intend removing the exhaust, I'd do it while the engine is in the van, and refit after it's refitted.

any ideas where i should go now with it ?

  14. Right I've put petrol in the top of the valve chambers to see if the valves are leaking and they've stayed full so that's good
I also called into absolute VW to chat to them about and after showing them the photos I ve got they seem to think its likely to be piston rings any thought s anyone

i'd agree, the petrol trick is a good sign, and if you had smoke it could more than likely be rings as most said earlier, might as well do them now it's apart innit.

  16. The head for number one and two
One of the barrels has been blowing from the join between the barrel and head

Which cylinder was your low compression reading on?

Youve pulled the engine and started to strip it dude so id clean it all up and fit all new seals

  17. The low compression reading was on 3 ( got my Cly mixed up lol)which is the oiley one I ll get a new set of barrels and pistons orded in a week or so

get yer heads decoked too Ste, remove some of that carbon build up - you can also do a gentle relap of the seats as well, fettling them will do no harm!

  19. This head has been leaking... the "gasket" needs to be removed from all the heads, and the barrels lapped into the heads with some fine valve grinding paste.

I would say that the oil mess is push rod tube seals, and the crank oil seal behind the fan...

As for the rings, it's a possibility, especially if the B&Ps are Chinese ones... your engine has had a rebuild at some point as the pistons are flat tops, and not dished OG ones!!

  20. i ve had the fan off yesterday and didn’t notice any oil but i will check next time i am up there ??
i am going to replace the push rods seals anyway as it seems daft not to why its in bits :)
also whats best for getting all the carbon off the heads ?
