Blimey your not messing about mate! It looks as oily as the engine in my westy when we pulled it and we couldn't find the leak! but its gotta come out again for a rebuild at some point in the not too distant future, are you gonna change the oil cooler seals while you've got it out and in bits? I changed them on mine and as Zed said, the old seals had become very hard and brittle
I use a rotary brush in my die grinder... followed by a roloc scotch pad... they usually come up a treat
most likely as is its in bits now and i am thinking a full gasket set might be the way to go so if i ve got em might as well bung em in as i am a long way out my comfort zone with it all ready
Drop the motor and get it looked at fella!!!i have one doing the same in a deluxe bus!!!when its out you can give the whole thing a good clean then get it to a reputable engine builder for a quote!!if the bus is a keeper it will be worth it in the long run!!...specially for those travelling in your wake /smog
I agree you should pull and reseal the barrels to the case, but I wouldn't write off the pistons/barrels without inspection first, you might just need rings.
cheers paul I’ve dropped em into a local machine shop and he’s going to have a phone round to see if he can hold of one for me and drop new ones in the others while he’s at it
just took the pots off and found these like this i can feel very slight ripples in no2 pot i know its new rings but will i need new pots n pistons ?
I'm thinking about replacing the barrels an pistons on mine with 1911cc ones but it needs the heads opening up a bit to fit 'em
What are you showing us? Pistons look ok to me. Judge wear in the barrels by whether they have a step at the top of the stroke.
Lowie dude use the macro function on your camera to take close up pics the function often looks like a little tulip We will be able to see a lot better what your trying to show us dude Are the pistons or barrel walls scratched?
There's a distinct lip at the top off the piston but I thought that was normal One of the bottom rings fell apart once it was off while 3 off them feels smooth one does feel like its got slight ripples in it Like I said I in a previous post I am well out of my comfort zone with this
Don't understand piston lip? Pistons look ok. Check the barrels, the rings wear them up to as far as they reach up the bore - about 6-8mm down. Above there will be muck and carbon. Clean that and then check for the wear - feel with your finger/nail.
Lowie, where are you based?? if it is mars, it might take me a few years to get there Why're you out of you comfort zone? is it just engines in general??
I am in Nottingham Paul iam only uncomfortable because I ve never took a engine down this far I am sure with advice and help that comeing from this thread and others I ll be be fine there's just going to be quite a few daft questions comeing up
Ah, well just take your time, don't rush things, take loads of photos, and ask plenty of questions, and you'll be alright bigger is always better
