Is this the biggest socialist advance since the war?

Discussion in 'General Discussion' started by Sick Boy, May 21, 2017.

  1. Financially savy people will find away to dodge this Eg take equity release, spend it or give it to children etc, then they will not have to pay towards social care costs.

  2. People keep saying the state can't afford to pay for social care, teachers, police etc

We can afford whatever we want, it's all about choices.

Social care will be cheaper if we all contribute and if we don't allow companies to make a profit out of it.

We could afford to bale out the banks, we can afford to spend a fortune bombing far away countries, we can afford hs2.....but social care is too expensive!

I know what type of society I want to live in.

There are always choices, I prefer ones that benefit loads of normal people, rather than a few wealthy individuals or corporations.

I'm often ashamed of the human race!

  6. Even if the latest corporation tax cuts are reversed, we will still have one of the lowest corporate tax rates in the western world. It's also why corporations will not clear off abroad if the tax goes up a bit - it's still expensive to relocate, and the tax rate is still higher elsewhere. And there are still 65 million consumers in this country to sell to.

  7. And in answer to the OP about this being a move towards equality - not really. Those with modest assets will be required to get rid of all but £100k of their house's value before they get help from the state. Those with lots of wealth will have enough money not to be affected by this, and most likely will be using private healthcare anyway. So the reality will probably be to create even more of a divide between the super-rich and everyone else.

And remember this is from a government that has seen the biggest real-terms decline in wages in any first world country apart from Greece (and look at their economy), and the biggest increase in the wealth of the 1%. I think I'm getting an idea as to where their priorities lie.

What will £100k be worth in 10 years time, would it buy you a caravan in Wales. I suppose they will just keep putting the threshold up.

On a slightly different note. I just had my mortgage protection policy through. £30 a month had just gone up to £35 a month due to insurance tax. WT... is that all about?

  9. Speak to the car insurance people, they're all talking about that at the moment. It started off in 1994 at 2.5%. It was 5% in 2010 - it's now 12% after yet another increase at the last budget.

As said earlier at present if in care home you pay your own way until
your assets are down to 23 grand and that includes your property

  13. You can be sure it's 'taking nothing from the rich and giving it to the poor' .... without the Tories we'd be like some cold third world dumping ground on the edge of Europe, with old people living on dog food, expensive trains that don't run on time and deregulated taxi services , Tories won't let that happen (unless you paid them)

  14. This proposal applies regardless of whether you are in a care home or your own home.
