Is this the biggest socialist advance since the war?

  1. But isnt it the tories who have failed to cost their policies and the labour party that have? Wasnt there a challenge from labour to the tories to have each of their manifestos costed independantly and the tories that refused?

  2. From each according to his ability, to each according to his needs.

Isn't that what we do here? Share knowledge, help and support each other. And techenders. And isn't it lovely, how many times have we all said how nice the tlb hive mind is?

    Breaking news: tlb is socialist!!!

    :D

If the tlb is socialist it's a sad reflection of the times the tlb should about vwt2s
However consider in 2009 the government said if you are in a nursing home and have more than 23000 including (note) property you will pay for you own care ! That was a Labour government ! Fast forward to 2017 and the Tories are proposing raising it to 100000 !

  4. Eh? I think he means that because we share info & help each other & because these are also socialistic values that there is a common trait in both tlb & socialism - it's not a bad thing, it's a nice thing. #forthemanynotthefew

  5. Yes, but currently only 3.2% of the elderly population live in care homes. This change will therefore affect a much greater proportion of the elderly population.

  6. New day, more Labour promises. Now its Uni tuition fees. What will they promise tomorrow.

  7. free trips to the moon (and hopefully back) :D

  8. Suggest you have a look at Ermintrude's link to see why even the Tories are opposed to this proposal

  9. Tuition fees was a policy announced in the manifesto which was leaked two weeks ago and published last week i believe. Its not todays news. The promise of at least some attempt to govern for the majority of the people of the country might be nice witha bit of social justice thrown in.

Dont think theyve got as far as reinstating clause 4 yet!

  10. What's clause 4 then?

Tuition fees one must wonder with the other costs of going to university whether removing these will increase social mobility much?

  11. The common ownership of the means of production. It was dropping it, apparently, that made New Labour electable!

  12. Maybe they'll promise to eradicate the deficit by 2015...

  13. I know, brilliant isn't it! And fully costed.

Why shouldn't this generation have the opportunities of previous generations; free education, decent pay, decent contracts and a benefit system to catch you when you fall rather than punish you and access to a good free health system?

After all, it was all of these things that enabled them to buy their own homes and now some of those people want to pull the ladder up. Crying 'we can't afford it', while allowing multinationals to get away with paying less tax than the working man.

Let's leave the ladder down and help future generations have the benefits and opportunities we all had.

  16. Maybe just maybe Labour will curb borrowing that is spiralling out of control under this tory govt. The defecit hasn't been cut as promised, yet spending on health & public services has!??? We all know that they are lining their own pockets again it is just a question of how long we will let them get away with it!!

  17. Not much longer hopefully. I would love to see where the money from austerity has actually gone.

In other news, may kept dementia tax away from wider Tory party, announced without them knowing. Hmm, trusting her with brexit negotiations doesn't bode well.
Oh and looks like they've 'bought google' today somehow. If you google 'dementia tax' the first thing that comes up is a Tory advert.

    About that trust.....

  18. Never really followed politics all those years (20) ago. so thanks.

The generational arguments I don't get, the old versus youth placing one against the other, doesn't strike me as very inclusive. I'm only in my mid 50s but I remember us making do, no foreign holidays, no eating out, mincemeat for lunch twice a week, stewed to death steak another, liver no bacon, no designer clothes, we left school at 16 and went to work, usually at very low level of pay. In fact compared to today's families as a working class family we were pretty poor, I remember going out to a cafe and my mum picking up four cups of coke, which my dad promptly put back, we can't afford that he said. The old days weren't necessarily land of opportunities, milk and honey you describe.

Tuition fees are an interesting policy, arguably in the old days very few went to Uni, I didn't until I was in my mid 30s and then worked every hour to avoid too large a loan, keep on top of my mortgage etc. I expect the socio-economic data would show that those going to Uni are mainly those in the ABC1 categories so really it sounds better than it actually does and going back to my previous point in the 70s there wasn't Blairs 'education for all', we went to work and bought a terraced house in a poorer part of town.

Don't ask me what the solution is, I'd be quite happy to pay more tax on the basis it improved local services etc, but I suspect I am in the minority ... spend spend spend on myself is what it is all about now sod the consequences and blame old folk.

  19. You can't spend spend soend on yourself if you are giving the tories all your money! Free tuition fees, what is actually wrong with that? Why can't my kids have the same opportunities as the privaliged? Are they any smarter because they have money? Usually not! Also under the last Labour government (when borrowing was no where near as high as it is now) I had money in my pocket, houshold appliances had never been cheaper & everyone seemed happier! Under the current govt. everyone seems angry & ready to assault or rob you. Oh & I've got no money!

  20. In todays society what does "the privileged" actually mean ... bit like judging who are "the disadvantaged".

anyway its all become a free for all about free school meals, tuition fees, winter heating allowances, tax, etc ... what's in it for me. Despite the election being almost three weeks away I'm already bored of the whole political debate and I think this is time for me to "unwatch" this thread.
