Not sure I’m feeling that keen or brave, plus I need to remember the piece of information I overlooked last time......if it ain’t broke.......don’t fix it!!
I am glad its the cheap and simple fix. The ball goes in flat through a gap in the lip in the hole , then is rotated upright inside the end of the selector bar. On mine I had to deburr the lip on the hole to get the old ball out where the selector rod had hit it, using a needle file. You may have the same trouble 'posting' the new one in. It will make an amazing difference. The driveshaft seals are worth doing if theres any sign of gearbox oil being thrown off- one of mine had coated the underside of the bus. The input shaft is worth doing because if that fails, oil goes along the shaft and into the clutch. Unlike crank seals where the oil just gets thrown off the clutch. My input shaft seal went hard, wore, and the oil leak caused the clutch to slip doing 60 up a slight hill overtaking on the M27, for a short while the engine screamed..
Thanks once again for the info, just need to find a new donut now, had a quick look at justkamper but I couldn’t see one, @77 Westy mentioned a Steel ball......thoughts anyone?
Wow you must have a well trained ear there @zedders, I find it hard to distinguish between any of the noises coming from the back of the bus
Nothing apart from what set my out on my journey of discovery to find the missing first gear, clutch bearing giving up the ghost.
If your gear lever vibrated, like they do, you'd hear it and might end up holding your knob to stop it buzzing away. With your superior 6 rib box you won't have had to put up with this annoyance.
Start in the nosecone. New ball, add washers on that shaft with the spring if required. Then all the usual including the most important of all - the pin on the gear lever and the slot it locates in.
I gave a link to the steel ball earlier, it’s an upgrade to reduce the wear that a standard plastic ball suffers from and is well worth fitting while you have the box out. Talk to Bears for gearbox parts, forget JK. Another simple upgrade worth fitting when you have the nose cone off is a thrust plate https://weddleindustries.com/products/9372/9372 Bears would also have this. It replaces the gasket, just use sealant either side of the plate.
“ holding your knob to stop it buzzing”.......... do you get many funny looks doing that whilst your driving?
Well I can confirm that Bears do indeed have steel balls @snotty......I’ve just put my order in along with a new nose cone seal. Didn’t go for the “thrust plate” as the guy said I would need to machine 1 mm off the mating face of the nose cone to allow for the plate thickness and I have no way of doing this whilst on furlough and he also said if there is no sign of damage internally it really isn’t required......super helpful guy......so now just awaiting delivery. Now all I need to find is a gasket.
Loving this thread as an example of how helpful TLB can be. A little disappointed at all the missed innuendo opportunities - for the real TLB experience - but great collaborative work and encouragement to get stuck in (ooh matron) and have a go. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
