I personally couldn’t agree more, I’d like to take this opportunity to thank @snotty @zedders @mikedjames and even the “late comers” (oo-er misses, just for you @Gingerbus) @77Westy and finally @Lasty for all your technical help, encouragement and friendly banter.......Gentlemen it has been a pleasure to share my quest with you and once the parts turn up I will be posting again to let you know the outcome. Stay safe one and all.
@Flyer60 When you refill the box use Castrol Syntrans Transaxle 75W-90, or similar fully synthetic GL-4 oil. https://www.opieoils.co.uk/p-6363-c...synthetic-car-gearbox-oil-formerly-taf-x.aspx
I think you deserve a gold star for whipping a type 4 and the transmission out in half a day. Def a TLB record. Worth checking on your nosecone whether the traditional hairline crack has started around the circular web that supports that ball race in the main case. Both of my nosecones had cracks (hence folk installing support plates). You're not done yet, btw . Perfect opportunity to pull your main gear selector shaft out of the conduit under the floor and check the state of the nylon "shuttlecocks" that support it. Keep the originals if they're in good shape. Also clean the congealed 40-year-old grease and dead flies out of the conduit, and put some fresh stuff in. You'll kick yourself later for not doing it. Final flourish: fit a CSP rear coupler (best there is) and as above fill the whole lot up with Castrol Syntrans. You'll be slicker than a slick thing
Post #1 ‘Whilst I was doing the clutch I changed out all the gear shift bushes and now I have a problem’.
When someone writes ‘all the gear shift bushes’ I assume they mean ‘all the gear shift bushes’ but we both know what assuming means.
What happens when you buy a kit to change all the bushes is you find there's nothing wrong with your shuttlcocks which is fortunate as the ones in the kit don't fit. Then only one of the two types of front bushes is needed and the rear coupler is made of cheese so you just use the nylon parts if any. The unusable parts sit in a bag on a shelf.
Been in the garage all day cleaning 40 odd years of crud off the gearbox......looking a lot better already, by the way @snotty what paint did you use on your gearbox? I will check for the hairline crack around the nose cone end first thing tomorrow and also pull the broomstick? Out and inspect, obviously I didn’t do this then I changed the bushes ( new ones are quite awful in manufacture). CSP coupler.....oh go on then I might as well the old bus hasn’t really cost me that much in the 8 odd years I’ve had her though having said that the Mrs now wants me to look at the interior!!
Deffo give the broomstick a lick of new grease. Only chance before the tranny goes back in. I did my box with gold (other colours are available ) engine paint...and it was horrible to apply. Dried too quickly to brush properly. I'm sure folk here will have some other suggestions.
