Gearbox selection issues

  1. Hey Guys,
It’s been a while since I posted anything, bus has been running like a dream until I needed to change out the clutch, which all seemed to go to plan. Whilst I was doing the clutch I changed out all the gear shift bushes and now I have a problem. When trying to fit my empi gearshift back I now only seem to be able to select 3rd and 4th gears? I’ve tried adjusting the position of the shifter every which way but it still doesn’t want to play with 1st and 2nd? In fact when I go to select what I assume is 2nd gear the engine cuts out!!
I am pulling my hair out as to what is wrong and I’m now under severe pressure as I promised to take my daughter to her wedding in the van which fingers crossed will still be taking place in August. Can anybody please help me out and tell me what I’m doing wrong.
    Thanks

The only reason gear selection could cause the engine to cut out is if you had reconnected your reverse light feed on the coil to the -ve instead of +ve and were in fact selecting reverse rather than second. That's a well known oops.
Hope that helps in some way.

I think someone should compile a bullet point troubleshooting list of such things.

  4. ^this. You’re mis-selecting into reverse at some point, and as the reversing light switch is wired to the wrong side of the coil, you’re shorting the contact breakers out, so no sparks.

Have you got the reverse lockout plate under the shifter?

  5. Ah I’d never have thought of that, could make a lot of sense as I’ve also fitted electronic ignition that came with a new coil that I’ve also fitted, guess I best go take a look. Which wire is the reverse light feed
Thanks for the help I will keep you posted.

The extra one on the negative coil terminal. :D It should have a fuse in the wire and disappear on the LHS through the bulkhead under the firewall on it's way to the switch on the gearbox.

Where's the fun in that? This isn't Wikipedia. :D

  8. Here is what is connected to my coil, just checked my old coil and that has 3 terminals on it where as the viper has only two, so I intend swapping it out and then I take it I just switch the blue fused wire from negative side as it is now to the positive side

You should be able to pinch a terminal from your old coil and add it to your new one.

Blue wire on coil has a fuse going off. So its not for a rev counter.
Move that over to the side with the red wire for the Pertronix or whatever, that will stop it cutting out in reverse..

Then your selector plate under the gear lever at the front is too far to the right so it selects reverse instead of second gear. Or its knackered. (I have an EMPI shifter, both have happened to my bus)
Undo /slacken bolts. Tap shifter base to the left with lever in first/second position over to left side of "gate" .
With engine stopped no slop in mechanism it should click into all 4 gears.

First gear should line up almost precisely with the handbrake especially on a hill start on a 1 in 3 hill...

Definitely not a genius I just got my reply in first. lol

  13. Thanks for the info Mike, I will try what you have suggested, fingers crossed,oh I should have said my bus is a left hooker but that shouldn’t make a difference should it.

No, for either hand drive the gear lever and shifter mechanism is the same.
