My brothers 2cv had a sad demise. My bro emptied his garage and piled all the scrap outside next to his prized Citroen. He called the scrapman telling him there was some scrap piled up outside of his garage and it was his when he wanted it.He came home from work that evening and the 2cv had gone. A quick call to the scrapman and he heard its fate. You guessed it, the scrapman thought it was part of the pile, crained it onto his truck and it was crushed before my bro had found it missing. Absolutely truly gutting story I still whince when I think about it.
I wanted one of these for many years in my youth, then the Clio William's. I might get a GT5 if I see a nice one The Mrs will freak though.
I have just been helping on one of these a hk500. Needed a little body work and alignment ( I like alignment , dor gaps etc) though I needed a sledge hammer and a scaffold board to get the wing gaps good, surprisingly strong car , spent 4-5 hours pounding that front wing, looks sweet now, may be at goodwood this year, will try to get a picture or 2 tomorrow . 147 mph top end 0-60 in 8.5 seconds Lots of stainless and alloy, no cheap chrome plate on it!! Lots of leadwork though.
Just to inject a bit of reality into all this French car reminiscing - I had a Renault 5 Campus as my second car and it was such a hideously unreliable tin box that when I got rid of it, I asked my mechanic to recommend what type of car I should get next, and he said to buy German. I bought a Mk2 Golf Driver for 3 grand and that's what got me into VWs.....
I rather like French cars. Fave for the sort of beauty that makes me want to kiss it is the DS. I'm also rather fond of the 2CV and Renault 4. As little hot hatches as a youth(ish) I was keen on Renault 5 turbo and Peugeot 205 gti. There are other citroens I like but not sure of the model. Just recently I have become a little interested in the Renault estafette as possible cheaper swop for my vw!!!!!
I forgot about those! They had all six, or maybe 5 of the 6 at goodwood a few years ago. Amazing cars.
The Quatrelle for the win. What is not to like? Door pockets big enough to hold wine bottles, Superbly comfortable long travel suspension, A longer wheelbase on one side than the other An exhaust system tucked under the front wing. And a millionty miles to the gallon.
My Mum and Dad had a Citroen XM. Stupid over-engineered thing. Looks so dated now I can't even bear to put up a picture. However it was lovely to drive. Like sitting in a honeyed glove.
However if I ever had more money than sense I would buy one of these. Citroen DS - beautiful old thing.
I would say any Citroen before the mid-1990s but actually I've had a Pug 205 and it was a great car! However my vote would be the DS or 2CV.
