You may have already said but this is a T4? Does it have hydraulic followers I wonder. Maybe nobody has noticed this and set them with gaps - if they don't pump up it makes an unholy racket.

has to be a t4 it's an auto

  3. Yeah there hydraulic but adjusted to that spec? Tdc adjusted til it was tight then slackend 1/4 of a turn? Was what I was told they needed to be? Does that sound right?

No that advice is totally wrong, adjust until it touches then 2 whole turns IN. It would be great if that's all it is. :)
Having re-set them they may take quite a while (up to 20 minutes - you really need to drive), to quieten down. As you don't KNOW this is the source of the noise (sounds like a machine gun?) I would get someone round who knows what they're on about (which your mechanic clearly doesn't) before you run it for that long . If it were a big end, the more you run it the more damage you're doing. Stop in time and the crank is safe, wear through the soft bearing surface and the steel backing will wreak havoc on the crank journals.

If a big end has let go, which is possible but unlikely, rocking the engine to and fro via the fan should produce a detectable clunk particularly when that cylinder is on the compression stroke with the valves shut. I see no reason a big end would have let go after 10 mins running on the drive unless someone forgot to put any oil in the engine...

  5. Bloody hell I had 2 engine builders tell me to put it til its rights then 1/4 off? Did tell them both it was hydraulic as well grrr! Will try that 1st then? Thought it was a valve adjustment in the 1st place hence checking? Cheers zed hope this helps :)

  6. I hoping its the valves now you ve said about the adjustment! Had a well know aircooled engine builder tell me the same setting?
Didn't knock at all for 1st 20 mins of it running so was told it was unlikely a shell gone as it would of knocked from the start? Will check valves again and see how we go if no change ill post a video see what you all think?
Oh and ill be using another mechanic to strip it down next time! Grrr ha

  7. Ps done the rocking of the engine via the fan and there no movement at all ?

@zed - remember when my hydraulics had bled down from sitting 3 months with no engine oil in and partially stripped? i thought my engine had gone for sure....... half hour running at various revs before it suddenly went quiet.

Double check the engine end of the push-rods are actually located in the centre of the followers as they can sit on the edge - an oddly set adjusting screw can be a clue.

My first van had a T25 engine in it that did the same - I had a bad few minutes thinking the engine had totalled itself while sitting on the drive not running! Then I realised it couldn't have. That was when I started to take an interest in my engine! Up until then I drove it about and put petrol in the hole in the side now and again.

  12. I'm really really hoping it is just the valves.let you all know shortly :)

Got to go, I'll have to wait until later to find out. My money's on this. Fingers crossed for a free fix. :)

  14. Must admit I concentrate on them looking nice rather than sounding right :( had my fair share of probs thou that I always seem to workout myself but when it comes to rebuilding its easier to give it someone else to do. Paint shops and engine oil ,grease don't mix :s ha

  15. Just re did valves to 2 full turns in and I don't get any compression at all? It's defo not the box! Turn torque converter by hand when disconnected and can't hear anything catching? Am thinking its bent a valve already or a shell has gone :( still no movement in end float? Checked compression and best I've got is 8 bar worst 6? :(

  16. Are you definitely sure that you have hydraulic lifters?

Are the pushrods aluminium or steel?

  17. Well I thought it was? But guessing not now re did valves but had no compression at all? So set back to 0.15 and had compression again but not what it should of been? Have tried to get hold of fella that built it up to find out what the push rods tubes were like but won't see him till Monday now :(
Think I may just run it like it is for a bit and see if i kill or cure it :s

Rods, not tubes. If you really want to know, off with a rocker shaft and post a pic of a pushrod on here.
Or look down the pushrod tube with a torch. All circles = solid, circles with two parallel lines (a spring clip that holds it together) = hydraulic.

  19. You can check the pushrods easily with a screwdriver with a magnetic tip... Pop the rocker cover off and if it sticks you have steel pushrods and hydraulic lifters

  20. Cool thanks will check it out in the morning thou its doing my head in that much may have to pop back to the unit to check it out :) big thanks for the help :)
