Auto box knocking

Discussion in 'Mech Tech' started by Gaz2510, Sep 6, 2013.

  1. Just fitted the engine back into the camper and its sounds like a knocking noise coming from torque converter? Pulled engine back out and refitted torque converter felt like it slid on the splines ok put engine back in and it still knocking? Any ideas? :s thanks

  2. try lardy or rickyroo on here?

  3. Cheers :) just pm rickroo just not sure if there a certain way of putting the torque converter in? Or if gearbox gone?

  4. was it knocking when you first took the engine out, or is this a project and you've now got to engine back in stage?

Have you filled the auto box with oil??

  5. Have you attached the converter plate to the drive tight?

  6. Yeah the three bolts are proper tight, checked underneath and you can see it up tight to torque converter through bell housing any ideas much appreciated :)

  7. Sorry Paul yeah it's full with new oil etc have had the engine running bits was missing and seals wanted changing so had engine rebuilt with new pistons, barrels, and I had the heads done as well with new valves etc, engine run fine for 10/15 min then started knocking?

  8. was mis firing not missing bits :s bloody pred text ha

  9. Is it definitely coming from the gearbox? Starter motor isn't loose is it?

  10. I don't think it's the gearbox mate? If it wasn't making that noise before and you've bolted the converter plate to the drive then should be all good? Converter plate was tight to engine as well I take it? Just trying to think for you?

  11. Can't pin point it tbh but sounds like it? But Can't feel any vibration thou? It just sounds horrible! Goes slightly when you rev but knocks again slowing down? Will double check starter in morning but sure it was? But have done stupider things :s ha thanks lardy :)

  12. Definitely sounds like something's loose fella. Let us know how you get on? :)

  13. Cheers lardy ill let you know how I get on tomorrow :) there nothing else that has to be in line when putting torque converter on? Felt it locate on the splines but there that small spline rod in the centre which a bit suspect? Thou that felt in place as well?
    Thanks

Have you driven it or is this all in neutral? Did the oil light go off?
Why did you remove the torque convertor?
Get a stick and press one end against your ear and the other to parts of the engine/gearbox.

  15. Just all in neutral or park, didn't remove torque converter to begin with just after the noise started to make sure it was on the splines correctly? Have done that all over but nothing pin pointing it? Does it less when plugs out but only needs to be under a bit of pressure to start knocking?

Difficult to imagine what you could have done wrong fitting the engine.
The engine has been altered, the gearbox hasn't. Contact whoever did the build?

  17. He been to look at as well as few other mechanic and everyone scratching heads at min :s even with engine out there nothing obvious no rubbing marks etc ? And I ve had changed the odd engine over but not had this prob before

  18. Can they not run the engine on a stand in the workshop fella?

  19. May be coming back out in the morning and being best tested :s going to disconnect torque converter 1st and see if it does it running then?

You mean just take out the three bolts and start it up? I really wouldn't do that unless you know better...
