Auto box knocking

  1. Well that's what I was gonna do? I ll try by hand 1st and see if I can see where it's coming from? It doesn't always do it by hand turning slowly? So it hard to pin point exactly and no obvious vibrations :s thanks again for any ideas

  2. yeah, cos the engine won't start

Engine rebuilt, now knocking.... I think you've answered your own question!! Did someone reputable do the rebuilding??

Or is it only knocking when the engine is in neutral but not in park?

  3. Knocks in both? Yeah he a reputable builder plus all new parts used as u supplied. Really doesn't sound like its from engine but from the box?
Why wouldn't engine start if torque bolts out then??

  4. I supplied new parts not u sorry Paul ha:s

  5. Because the starter ring is on the torque converter and not on the drive plate!!

  6. Drive plate... note the lack of roundness, and teeth for the starter to engage on!! ;)

  7. Doh, cheers Paul guess I won't be trying that then :) looks like engine back out this morning :s

  8. I did wonder, lol

  9. Ask whoever did the rebuild if they have 2 of these sat on their bench still [IMG]:eek::eek::eek:

  11. Ah don't say that mick its only the crank I've not had rebuilt :s ha
Just hoping it nothing to major?
Thanks for help and ideas will post my findings later :s

  12. Or they have fitted standard bearings to a crank that has been ground?? Can you pop a video up of the knocking?

  13. Not had the crank done thou builder said end float felt ok? And had no suspects of crank before? Only had engine rebuilt for piece of mind and to change all the seals etc, did have a crack in 1 head but had another and had that reconditioned as well,
Will try and put a video on later?

Did he replace the big end shells? Or advise it would be sensible? They cost next to nothing and take an hour or less to change... I wouldn't entertain doing that top end work without at the minimum replacing these shells.
So, does it knock from cold now it's started or do you have to warm it up to start the knocking. There's a reason I'm asking. ;)

  15. Well made the noise on startup but seems to go when off tick over? Think I'm just gonna take everyone advice and get the crank re done :(

  16. No offense dude, but the builder shouldn't have even entertained just a top end rebuild!! Did he strip your heads to check for valve and guide wear??

  17. Yeah and they weren't the best so I sent heads off and had valves re ground in!
1 was cracked so changed that and had that head rebuilt!
Just gutted now :( would of had the crank done if I'd of known not spared any expense on the camper as I wanted it spot on! Just spent the last 5 months restoring it then this at the end!

Don't get too down, it might be something else. All noises are different, even a loose exhaust can sound like a metalic knocking so perhaps explore the cheap possibilities first.

As above a video with sound would help. And use a stick-o-scope, it can be very revealing.

Take the rocker covers off, perhaps a rocker stud has pulled or a nut wasn't fully tightened.

  19. I won't zed cheers :) if it has to have crank done then so be it?
Was told I'd never get the sunroof working right but after a few hrs its as good as new :) ImageUploadedByTapatalk1378543121.559022.jpg

  20. Already had rockers off to check valves were set and they were a bit tight but made no difference after being adjusted? :(
