Anybody else want to admit to having a model railway?

  1. I think I have a big box of "OO" guage in my parents loft that's been there untouched for 45 years. Could be available if anyone is interested.

  2. McAlpine's the bloke who bought Flying Scotsman and shipped it back from the US after Alan Pegler went bust, isn't he?

No, you're quite mistaken ...................... I just store things behind a screen of pallets.
    Probably is.
I'm not taking any chances either way.

  10. Hiding is such a loaded word. I prefer stored out of view. Much nicer.

My Dad has a great 00 gauge railway when I was a kid, all papier-mâché hills and proper buildings, real old steam locos from his childhood, and it was fab. I loved the smell the old controllers gave off (probably minutes away from bursting into flame!) but when they moved house he didn’t rebuild it.
After retirement, and another couple of houses later, he started to set it up again in his shed.... but never really got it going, and since they’ve moved again (apparently the last house now) it’s just in boxes in a shed, probably rusting away to nothing :(
He wants to sell it, and he really should.... but I have dreams of setting it up again properly when I retire, sculpting the hills from papier-mâché, reliving that old controller smell.....

  14. Same here, the collection I accumulated as a kid is in a separate box to the collection we amassed for my boys. The difference in build quality is very noticeable, the old stuff is twice as heavy and even the plastic is much stronger.

And then there's the N gauge sets I started collecting about 15 years ago.....

If it is under threat of rusting in a shed , i would get it to your place and keep it in the dry for the day or weeks of construction

Good advice, also if we have another complete lockdown or @scrooge95 has any work injuries she can build it whilst she’s at home :)

  17. The old controllers used to give out a reassuring hmmm and buzz, as well as a smell from the transformer coils under load.
Unless the collection has rare items the overall value is never as much as the time and commitment it took to build up.

    Keep it !

That’s what I thought.... and finding someone who actually wants it.
It’s not the money really though anyway, it never is.... just the idea of it getting binned if no one else would have it :(
I’ll try and find a safer storage place and then build it again in my dotage!

  19. The idea was that Would eventually end up in a terminus.
