My big bro took ownership of our set as he has 3 sons.
    00 gauge rings a bell.
My favourite was the exploding army freight carriage. I was always mucking about with that while my Bro painted bits of sponge green and brown and gluing lots of little airfix models and people and stuff.
I just liked to set the truck to explode right in the middle of scenes he’d just set up.

A house just outside my village has a maybe 10” track at a guess running around the edge of the grounds but never saw anything on it.

We do have the Bluebell railway less than a mile away, always makes me smile when I hear it woo-wooing and chuffing away.
Actually Bazza’s place is even closer, must be a couple of hundreds yards from it.

Last time I even looked at buying a model train set Ms.T took me by the ear and dragged me out of the shop in Sydney. :(
I don't fancy my chances that she's changed her opinion in the last few years.
It's so unfair I have so few pleasures in life.

  7. Like so much in my life, mine has fallen into a sorry state of disrepair. I’ve got to go up in the loft later in the week. I will take some pictures.

    Here’s the track I mentioned.

I mis-remembered the size - it’s about 6” or 7”. It has three rails, each with a central slot like a scalextric, so I presume the wheels have a centre ridge rather than a lip on the inner edge? Unless it’s just a guide...
And I guess the middle one is the power rail? Or perhaps a smaller gauge so it can run two different sizes?

I have a full set of Aslef Striking train Drivers :D

  12. I once went to the railway in Sir William McAlpine's back garden at Fawley Hill. That was one special boys own model railway. I think since Sir William passed away it is now available for private hire.

Makes perfect sense now. I think it’s in a state of disrepair though!

That's a telling sign that it was a period of our history and not part of today's narrrative

I’m glad this thread is still alive. Nice thread.

If I feel inclined I may relate the tale of my N gauge exhibition layout sold some years back to appease my son’s desire for a OO gauge layout.

  20. I was lucky to get to go to the invite only volunteers guest day five years ago, I recommend going if you get the chance what an eye opener. It was really Sir Williams passion and wonder how many changes have been made since he passed away.
