After my Pertronix died I replaced it with an Accuspark module, so far that’s lasted longer that the Pertronix did
I dont know which part failed on that unit I did the schematic for. I will do some experiments this weekend on the coils and the distributors I have. I have a suspicion the failed Accuspark unit will actually be working again.
Pertronix here too, brought with the bus in 2010. I do carry a set of points and condenser just in case I need to swap over, although reading some comments I now need to ensure this is possible!
You will need a timing light too. Thats why the complete pre-timed distributor with a clamp is quickest, with a 13mm spanner to undo the nut to lift the whole thing out. As I used on Monday.
Although we read about when it happens, do you TLBers commonly have ignition related breakdowns? I've never had one nor carried any spares previously (though now I have a spare distributor it would be tempting fate not to), I think they are quite rare?
Mine recent breakdown was in the ignition system. If you recall, the insulation on a wire got damaged and grounded the neg of the coil, I am not sure what having a full spare ignition system did to help other than adding in lots of ways to mix things up and help find the actual problem.
I probably see 3 or 4 module related breakdowns a year in the workshop. It’s not massively common, but it’s one of the first things I look for when a bus turns up on the yellow taxi of shame..
It’s a good question/point. I’ve been keeping an eye out for, then troubleshoot the most common problems talked about on here. Non-starting (for a myriad of reasons) seems to be the highest ranking. Might just be the most talked about though because an immediate solution is required. #2 Electrickery #3 Rust #4 Modifications & Upgrades. Then a whole world of other technical stuff i’m not even ready to think about Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
Me neither (touch wood), with points, an old Sparkrite, Pertronix or 123. There does seem to be a common thread running through these failures. Hint: cheap Chinese. Why do people buy these effing things?
Dunno if you saw this Steve, but a quick note halfway down this page highlights our issues. Great when they work, no so when they don't. I wish I hadn't had the problem coz I like the idea of the electronics compensating for any wear in the spindle and movement on the points, but hey ho! https://thelatebay.com/index.php?threads/chip.33075/page-28
I did indeedy. Started as a cough but developed into a misfire which got worse , lost power and after a few miles went onto 3 .. Swapped modules and things improved on the misfire front but still on 3 so in hindsight probably not totally a module issue . I popped into Peterborough but neither GSF or Euro parts had any leads , best Euro could do was a set of plugs so popped those in , nipped up the dizzy ends of each plug lead to seat better in the cap and that did the trick . Bonus being the bimbo serving at Euro didn't have a clue as she charged me for a single plug but I got four for £8.50 total - a small victory ... An observation from various module failure threads seems to suggest the Accuspark and other generic Chinese jobbies seem to start misfiring prior to failure whereas Pertronix just stop dead ... I did see that. Now I wonder how many people do break down, fix it then and there like you did but never mention it.
Had lots of bad running issues even with different dizzys and modules until I fitted a 123 then it’s ran the best it ever has for the last few years
