Didn’t know if there was anything special about the Pertronix dizzy or whether it is just an SVDA with module in.
Pertronix distributors are some random sub $10 Chinese thing with a $10 module in it (I found the VW distributors on Alibaba but still havent worked out what the Chinese manufacturer calls the generic PerSparkAccutronix ignition module everybody uses) . They may not have exactly the same locating dimples as the Bosch for the ignition unit/points , and you may find the module would not sit straight on the baseplate. (I have worked out about 70% of the schematic of an Accuspark module, until the cat stole it because he liked chewing on the silicone wires, and the second time he lost it.) The timing for points and electronic module in the same distributor will be different unless you know exactly what points gap to use to make it match. What you should have done is put the pre-timed 009 with its own distributor clamp on it in your spares box, and marked the number 1 lead on the cap with paint. Then the swap is just undo the nut round the back, and swap the whole thing including clamp. Using an 009 will not do anything bad. Just make that run up off the hard shoulder take another few seconds. Next Techenders we will make you do this while making scary noises behind you for realism.
If you've got the YMCA model, if you flip a switch inside you can get yourself clean and have a good meal. How cool is that?
So just a check for learning from this breakdown? Boils down to the failure of electronic ignition unit, a Petronix unit? And that you should cary a spare dizzy and should prepare yourself with knowledge of this backup unit re timing etc?
So, in case it’s all got too confusing, and you weren’t paying attention at techenders.... Turn the engine over with a spanner till it’s at tdc, with the rotor arm pointing to the plug lead for number one cylinder. disconnect the red and black wires from the coil undo 13mm clamp bolt remove dissy fit 009, turning the rotor arm as you push it down to locate the drive. put the dissy cap on, and if the rotor arm isn’t pointing to number one lead, move them all round 90 degrees so it is. connect green wire to the coil negative. Turn ignition on, and rotate dissy till you hear the points click / spark. start it up and time it with a strobe
Top Dead Center, basically the engine is at the start of the 4 stroke cycle. I am not explaining this very well am I?
Bit shocking for your neighbours seeing that silhouetted under the strobe light. Lucky to get away with it to be honest
