T1 engine rebuild

  1. Do you mean measure diameter? If you do I've acquired an internal Mic with different length arms for big and small diameters. Only problem is the smallest arm is missing. I'll have to make one.
The jig with the dial should allow me to set the cutters up fairly accurately.
It will be a piece of the centre bar on a flat plate with the dial bolted to the plate and calibrated. The tool holders will be placed over the piece of bar and the cutters throw adjusted and measured with the dial to whatever spec I need.

  2. An align bore is only about £80

  3. Yes but no challenge or sense of satisfaction

  4. Zed

You sound like my mate Robert who has a similar way of setting the cutters, using a tool he made from a micrometer. I expect you know that boring bars come with plug guages, which of course slowly wear out, but are extremely accurate. Good luck using an internal mic for that, I'm not sure whether I'd trust it, but if you know how the shells feel in a correctly bored saddle, which I suspect you do, you're half way there?

I'm just interested BTW, when it comes to engine building you need to be a properly tooled up machinist really, which I'm not.

  5. The case will also need shimming to make up for a pummelled thrust face so most won't touch it.

  6. Weld the case and machine it back to standard on the thrust .....I know what your saying about satisfaction but for me making a boring jig is so much work to get it decent ,true ,sized and chatter free my time is better spent elsewhere

  7. Id imagine it cant be easy welding a mag alloy case?

  8. No different than any other alloy , correct rods and an inert atmosphere

  9. Ive no idea ive never had any experiance
I only bought a mig and had a go as the bloke i used to use for welding ended up on the drink

  10. Ok well you'd need a decent TIG set

  11. From what research I've done you use a good grade aluminium tig rod, as that bonds to the ally in the mag alloy of the case :)

  12. Most of the alloy welding I do I use a 5% magnesium rod as you can anodise the job everything else is a aluminium silicone rod

  13. Sounds like that would be ideal then :)

  14. Back to this now the van is sorted. Gonna be interesting

What's the biggest oversize thrust you can get?

  15. 2mm I think

  16. Spoke to cool air this afternoon and they seem to think that they can get 4mm from somewhere in Belgium. Awaiting a call back
I won't use the full 4mm but will probably machine the bearing to fit whatever We Cut off the case until it's flat.

  17. best bit was I spent the day with my dad in the garage playing with stuff.

  18. Not a lot of case left at 4mm... 18mm I think... Bit thin for my liking!!

  19. This is never going to do a million miles again so I just need it to work without the crank nearly moving out of the engine bay. Started on the gauge plate for setting the cutters size tonight. Slow and steady.
