Morks Type 4 1800 AP engine project

Discussion in 'Mech Tech' started by MorkC68, Nov 1, 2013.

  1. I echo everything Steve said... Case needs to be bolted together at the correct torque for the measuring to be done..

And at the moment stateside are the only people with correct boring bar to do type 4 engines... Get Jim to do an acid clean at the same time... Cost is around £150 all in with return post... Case head studs need to be removed, and the 6 case half bolts and nuts need to be fitted!! :)

Its been nigh on eight months since I posted anything on here but parts are being amassed and we're close to being ready to start building.

    We have sorted & sourced:
1 reground crank & corresponding bearings
1 set 1915 pistons and barrels and wrist pins
    1 camshaft and followers
    Refurbished Distributer
Conrod bearings, cam bearings and crank oil seals
    Case breather box
    various pieces of tinware.
    AMC Cylinder heads

I sent the Bosch 0231 168 005 SVDA Distributer off to http://www.h-h-ignitionsolutions.co.uk/ for a full refurbishment inc electronic ignition and bench test, the results are excellent!

The engine case was absolutely caked in grease, burnt oil and grime. It not been easy cleaning it down but we made a cleaning bath at work which improved things!

Although we need to clean it further prior to the rebuild, we feel its clean enough to trial fit the crank and bearings on a dry run

The plan was to fit a pair of the 41mm & 34mm valve' heads, which we had..

one was in excellent condition, the other poorly repaired - Stateside did an assessment on them and found

So, we bought a pair of AMC 39.3 x 33mm heads

I have a few more bits to do on Gusbus but when we start on the motor, the plan is:

The crank needs the oil galleries checking for machining burrs and a degrease

Dry fit the bearings on the crank and case, side by side to check all is well and the crank turns free. Then pop both halves together, gently tighten up checking again that it all spins ok.
It should do, the bearing surfaces on the case are good, no damage and are in tolerance.

The bearing can be marked for alignment and cleaned, as can the crankshaft.

The dizzy drive and the crank gears need a damn good clean and refitting!

    More to follow :D

  7. Anything engine wise you still need? I've given up on my build, may have some bits your after.

I wouldn't dry fit the bearings and spin the crank old bean. :)

When I say dry fit, I mean lightly oiled, not oil free..couple of rotations to ensure it sits ok & turns! Does that make sense

    Yes, you had me worried!

metal to bearing with no lube  would do the bearing surface no good, before I do the trial, Ill give everything a damn good clean & light oil up!

  15. If your only turning by hand then it would be fine completely dry. If any of the contact parts 'picked up' it would indicate a metal on metal contact of similar hardness and make up. Which shouldn't happen anyway. So you would find the problem early. But I'm sure you knew that. :)

but there's s gap for the oil, without which the smaller cank will sit on the bottom. I wouldn't.

  17. I wouldn't either.
But you could with no ill effect, if everything is right.

Because it the first full build Ive done, Im going to err on the side of caution & make sure everything is lube'd up..better safe n all that! It may not matter, I dunno, I do want to do the build right & it last a long while!!

  19. Hi mate. Great post! My 2l CU engine blew a few months back and I've just got my hands on an 1800 AP just like this. Mine looks in better nick but has been sat for 3 years so I'm gonna strip and rebuild just like you. This post is gonna make life a hell of a lot easier. One of the dilemmas I'm currently having, is should I just refurb the 1800 heads, or refurb my 2l ones and fit them?
I haven't got the money to buy new like you did, so what do you think you would do in my case?

And btw....is that a MR2 in your avatar?

If the 1800 heads are the 41 & 34mm valve' ones I'd get them checked over, see what the state of play is & go from there.

My AP although it looked ditched, it measured up spot on in the bearing carriers, which was pleasing, I think the motor was sat for a couple of years. It needs a further clean yet..just to make sure all of the dirt & debris is clear!

Yes it sure is an MR2, XV250 at Elvington nr York, Nov 2013. I had the opp to have a day on the aircraft when they did fast taxiing :D
