For the last week or so I have been scrubbing parts up and checking things are okay & not scrap. First up was to do a bit of degreasing on the fanhousing:

Ive been using white spirit to soak into the grime followed by a dilute acid solution (so as not to harm the aluminium as suggested by our Metallurgist) to remove the really stubborn grime. I'll clean it up better in a parts washer when I have a few bits built up!

The Distributer had seized solid and looked like it was full of wood shavings and cement dust

with some very gentle persuasion, the shaft came out but had seized onto the oil-lite bush

We have measured the shaft and the dimensions come in at 12.48mm uniformly along the length. There is some pitting but I think its in between the upper and lower bushes, Ive got a new one on order along with the felt washers/spacers.

The oil pump was next up, this was covered in grime and smelled of petrol quite bad..

this was scrubbed up and looked okay, the shaft diameters showed no signs of wear - the driven gear shaft 14.00mm uniform along its length and the secondary gear shaft was 13.96mm uniform. The main concern was on one of the driven gears teeth, it has severe pitting which Im concerned about

    It cleaned up well though

I also made a start soaking the valves in my acid solution, to check them out for any signs of burning out etc - they cleaned up okay (I will get some emery cloth and finish them off at a later date)

I am concerned about the inlet valve for #1 cylinder, its got a very slight nick in it (more visible under a x200 microscope) but also, I have odd valves in one head compared to the other - which has vw stamped in them and thicker intersections between head and stem. @Paul Weeding, would this be a huge issue if we left them odd from one side to the other or swap the lot for matching ones?

I sourced a fan off ebay, which again needs a good scrub up

  7. New oil pump dude.. but you know that anyway ;)

Yeah I assumed that the pitting would render it scrap - I know it was a bit of a waste of time cleaning it but I want to do a thorough build!

  9. As long as the sizes match, then you'll be fine... The nick in the valve might be a problem tho

  10. Just one of those things dude... I always fit a new oil pump... just a dotting the I's and crossing the T's type of thing :)

yes the sizes all match up bang on, it looks like the start of burning out - Wilson shows an image of one which is considerably worse, which prompted me to pop it under the mic!

Heritage sell repro vales which aren't expensive as do Stateside Tuning. For the cost it may be worth replacing the lot as like for like is available :)

  12. What was the wobble like in the valve guides?

they warrant replacing I think, the wobble wasn't too bad but there was wobble there. My Dad looked to & he thinks we ought to replace them for peace of mind' sake!

  14.

So in that case you'll likely as not need new valves, and the seats might need a reface, as opposed to just lapping in the new valves!! :)

I might as well get identical ones all round along with valve guides too, the heads need decoking and lapping anyway, do a proper job opposed to a half one :)

  16. Good lad

Has anyone got an image of a type 4 motor showing the engine bar mounted with rubbers etc without the fanhousing fitted please, so I know what parts to source - looking straight on if possible!

    Thanks :)

  18. Not the engine bar, but these are the front mounts with rubbers.

Its been a few months since I last updated here, Ive been sourcing bits of missing tinware, engine mounts, engine bar and generally been busy with work!

Anyway, its high time I got the case halves cleaned thoroughly so I had a crack at getting some of the thick grime off..its hard going :(

Yukk! A good soak in Mr Muscle Oven Cleaner and the grime started shifting

Starting to look a bit better

Im going to get some Gunk and pressure wash it all so we can a, get the oil galleries cleaned better and b, measure the sizes of the bearing journals!
