Being made redundant this week

14 years and gone in a thrice. Well not quite a thrice, on Thurs I think.

The company was taken over a couple of years ago and the new owners promised to leave things unchanged for a couple of years, but as soon as the two years were up they made big restructuring changes that meant my job no longer existed. They offered me other driving jobs of varying types including a lead driver job, but my heart wasn't in it given the type of company the new owners are ( asset strippers masquerading as legit benefactors while pampering to shareholders ) so I put in for voluntary redundancy and got the letter saying yes last night.

Not sure if I have done the right thing, but there seems to be lots of lorry driving jobs out there. I might even do something for myself.

    C'est la vie! :)

You'll find something buddy I'm sure. Hope the redundancy is a good one and you can treat yourself before you start back!

The new owners probably need you out the way so they can rifle through the pension fund.

Onwards and upwards is my attitude to situations like this. Don’t look back

  8. Sorry to hear that - I took voluntary redundancy 25 years ago and it was the best thing I could have done - easy for me to say, but if you know your heart isn't in it then you'd be kicking yourself if you ended up leaving after a few months with nothing.

I was made compulsory redundant 10 years ago and was very indignant about it - although with hindsight, coming back late from pub lunches several times a week didn't help my case. Nor did falling down the pub stairs and getting carted off in an ambulance.

And the pub being directly under my office didn't help either.

    Good luck.

  9. Get down the docks in Southampton, Malc. Couple of Saturday nights, you'll soon make the money up

  10. There's allways work for those that want it, and are able to diversify. Take the money and run.

    Good luck:thumbsup:

Spend your redundancy wisely Malc. On booze, drugs and fast horse boxes :D. And as Bern says, onwards and upwards.

  12. Then just waste the rest

Not too upset tbh. Feel as if a weight has been lifted off my shoulders. The job was okay and the money was alright for what I did, but in truth 13 years of nights definitely took it's toll on my mood. Most of the time I felt as if I was just existing and getting through until the weekend. My smile seemed to have done a downward curl and at times I was beginning to wonder if I was stuck there for life. It most definitely feels as if a weight has been lifted. I'm having a couple of weeks off and deciding what I will do after that. I have already been offered a day job on artics for £10k a year more.

    Cheers all

  17. Good luck. I took voluntary redundancy a year ago and so far it's been OK. I have times where I wonder if I did the right thing but like you my heart wasn't in the new regime.

We don’t take on drivers who have been sacked, you can’t be too careful
