I’ve only met you once in ‘real life’ Malc and I’m a fairly good judge of character ( regardless of alchohol intake ) and i’d Say you can’t keep a good man down... it won’t take you long to sort something out.. everything happens for a reason and you’ll see that in a short while ...
    All the best ..

  2. According to hauliers they are crying out for drivers because of br ex it so you should be able to get a n other and with the redundancy you can afford to eat in service stations

Since I've never been made redundant I can't offer any advice. All I can say is that if you have to work just find something you enjoy doing.
    Good luck Malc.

  10. So true. My other half and I both got the push in January after 15 years and it’s been the best thing. I had a @hailfrank for a boss and life without him weighing it down is brilliant. My other half bought a Harley garage and I have the luxury of time to think of what I’d really love to do. In the meantime helping him.
I think pulling together a bit of this and a bit of that and going a bit left field would be great, like @Rustydiver and his drones and @21Window and his imports.
You’re bright and capable and inventive @Poptop2 and there aren’t enough people like that in the world. Best of luck.

  11. Sounds like things are already coming together - good luck. I'm sure you've made the right decision.

  12. Well, I’m not one for taking new jobs on a whim. But as we say in the snow plow business, I’m your astronaut.”

    Thank you.
I will take a couple of weeks and decide. I felt I was taking the easy option driving trucks if I am honest. I do have the ability to do something else. I have done okay in the past, but as you get older you kind of limit your thinking to what's easiest. My first thought when I was told was bank the money and get another driving job. Then I began to think about how I felt while the road droned away beneath me each night and the thought that keeps coming back is, I was bored and felt I needed to use my mind more. This is why I am going to take a bit of time out and see how I feel in a week or two. I like buying and selling. Usually I can do it well, but I have never had to rely on buying and selling to pay the way before. I did run a very successful small building firm that I built up from nothing before going into this job. It's always a a fall back.

  14. Sounds as if you have a variety of skills and experience and a clear mind. I was made redundant twice in my working days and it didn't do me any harm, quite the opposite and I went on to do better things and have a better life.

As has been said, its all too easy to keep doing the same old job for years and get slowly bored and in a rut.

Redundancy brings about a clearing away of the old stuff and opening doors to new opportunities. There is a lot of work out there of all kinds, that's why folks come here, millions of them.

If you fancy buying and selling, why not. With Ebay, thousands of folks buy and resell for a profit and make a good living out of it.

So. as you say, don't limit yourself, try new things, it will open up your mind. Maybe do some retraining or college courses, its all good. Maybe do a bit of building/ repairs jobs for old folks, aging population with money to spend but no energy. Do it all.

Firstly mate I want to say good luck. From your posts it’s clear you’ve got the right mindset and won’t let this news get in the way. There’s a question mark over my job which won’t be answered until Easter. The irony is they are always banging on about loyalty but when it comes to making efficiencies they would drop me like a hot potatoe.
I’m already looking round and found a few jobs which fit my skill set (grumpy old bugger)
I too am thinking about being brave and going out on my own.

    Cheers Chris.

It certainly centres your thoughts. I think I started this thread as a sounding board. You're right, it isn't a big deal and I have a lot of options I didn't have last week while my thoughts and time centred on driving a truck 300 miles a night. As you get older though, and haven't had to think that hard to live comfortably, you begin to doubt yourself and your abilities. I am certain it will be okay, I just want to be sure the last 15 years of my working life are doing something I enjoy doing, I have spent the last 35 doing what I needed to do. Time for a change I think!

So true. I am always asked if I am still building. Someone asked me if I would do an house up for them recently and when I told them the local day rate was £180 a day plus materials. They nearly keeled over. They are in their 60's and as you say think we can manage on £25 a day!
