Westfalia R&R Bed Help

  1. Where did you manage to find 22mm plywood? All I can find is 19mm or 25mm.

Also where did you get your foam from?

Just to put a cat amongst the pigeons - original full width Westy bed: seat back 430mm, base 500mm, seat overhangs the kick board by 50mm.

I doubt if you’ll be able to replicate the Westy seat back board if you use the Devon bracket on the bulkhead because the Westy seat back has a strengthening batten that sits below the rear deck when in the seat position filling the gap to the bulkhead.

Yes Neil, it’s my ’77 Helsinki. Or what was a Helsinki.
To avoid even more confusion, I’ll say no more.

    Mine is a continental.
    Bed seat base is 1380m x 540m x 22m thick.
    Bed back rest is 1380m x 480m x 22m.
    Foam is 120m.
From edge bed seat to bed support 140m
From edge bed seat to front of the hinge 335m
Hinge bracket on side panel 150m from kick panel.

    Hope this helps.

  6. Could you just explain these measurements a little more, I don’t quite follow.

In terms of the main measurements. The seat base at 540mm and back at 480 maybe just shifts where the extra is instead of 500mm for both (and 20mm extra on seat base towards the front of van) So maybe it ends similar. Could you tell me the amount of overhang you have of the base board over the kick panel when it is in seat mode, as this would really help work it out.

To be honest, think about what Nick's posted for you. All you need to do is fix the top board at 480mm wide to the hinges and then butt the base board at 540mm up to it ( not too tight coz you need to allow for upholstery thickness) and the over hang is what it is.

If it helps overhang measurements are:
    Seat mode 50m
    Bed mode 430m
All measurements are from the front of the kick panel.

Just to confirm....but it's not really necessary...I've got the same measurements as @nicktuft. Not surprising as it looks like we have similar buses. Mine is 1973 original Westy in Sumatra green and white.

    Doppelganger!

Sumatra Green is one of the best looking buses without a doubt.

  13. Thanks for the replies. The overhang of 50mm is slightly more than I thought. The reason I am slightly panicking is because I am staying with an acquaintance and am about to have to sofa surf around while I get the van sorted. I am therefore trying to progress with it and get it roughly right.

Interestingly after measuring some more and also checking out the foam from some old interior I already have, I think the foam is the dehidciding factor on seat board dimensions. The maximum I can really have for the back board is 500mm. The foam I currently have is only 100mm and in that case I would have the maximum length for the back board to try and cover the gap between the two. Reducing to 480mm and going deeper on the seat lower board to 520/540mm won't help hide the gap more.

I looked up the price of foam on various online foam selling specific websites and they are talking about £350 for just one piece of the set of three foams for the bed! Is there somewhere that does good thick foam cheaper that you guys have used or is this high cost normal and I should adapt my old foam. One of my pieces is correct, but the other would need cutting and gluing in order to create the correct depth.

No, no, no - you sure you didn't put mm when they asked for cm? Bit like @nicktuft who quoted over a kilometre for the seat width above, 1/2 kilometre for the depth and the height of a 5 storey block of flats for the thickness, though we knew what he meant. :)

  16. So I got an estimate which was very expensive on a couple of sites. I then found one which was much more normal in pricing. I have found that I am able to reuse some foam I already have and then get better high end memory foam at a later date when I revamp the interior and tidy it up.

Something I really need help with is to find out how the Westfalia Continental wardrobe sits against the drivers side bulkhead and side of the van. I have put the bed in with the hinge supports resting in the correct place, I have put the wardrobe right up against the driver's bulkhead and then put the side seat kick panel (with table leg) between the two and it is a little bit too spaced apart.

I am wondering if there were some rubber plates or spacers of some kind that sit between the wardrobe and drivers bulkhead that would have protected the wood of the wardrobe and also shortened the distance between the bed and the wardrobe?

Are there any other reference points to know where exactly the wardrobe sits?

I have 2 rubber spacers (bungs) about 25mm between the top of the bulkhead and the wardrobe. These spacers fit onto bolts that go through the bulkhead, through the spacers and then through the wardrobe. There are 2 raised areas near the top of the bulkhead on the side away from the seat where the bolts/spacers fit. These give a gap between wardrobe and bulkhead, hope the picture shows it. 20220710_131658.jpg

  18. This is helpful thanks, but could you try taking another picture as I can’t see in that one what you are describing.

Also do you mean the spacers are 25mm in depth?

Will do and the spacers are approximately 25mm in depth. Give me a few minutes.

  20. BB35C76B-4406-4A9A-B5FF-FBFCBA2D97CA.jpeg I have just moved my wardrobe away and I think I see where you are saying the rubber spacers bolt to. I have the holes in my wardrobe and the placement looks about the same.

Are the holes drilled in those two raised bits drilled right in the centre?
