Westfalia R&R Bed Help

Discussion in 'Mech Tech' started by Bay Dreamer, Jun 25, 2022.

  1. So I have a RHD westfalia continental interior that I collected in pieces over the years. I am just trying to put the bed together from what I have got but I am struggling to find any guides, phots, or information on it.

It looks like the spring loaded catch on the hinges has been put in the wrong position because it doesn't look like it can hook on the place it is supposed to. I also don't know what other bits for the bed I may be missing. I have been searching all over the internet and have found various photos and threads with possible bits I am missing.

It seems like the base of the bed that turns into the seat had bent brackets hidden underneath to rest on the front panel of the bed frame? Were there also other metal brackets attached to the van to support the seat back rest that is also part of the bed?

I would also like to know if the wooden base of the bed sat directly on the metal cargo floor or whether they put a piece of plywood etc down first, as this will alter the height of it all.

    Photos to follow.

Directly, there are T bolts that hook into those fitting on the steel floor by the wheel arches.
    No.
Are they bent? Is the hook part worn? Photos would help, easier than guessing.

Sorry newish phone and losing my patience with trying to add a link but if you go into the Restoration section and look under Westie heading in the right direction there are loads of photos on their and i can send you some this week alternatively if you are local (Henley on Thames) you are more than welcome to come and have a look yourself .

  7. Coach bolts are used in most locations for fitting the bed to the floor...one location has a t bolt as I remember...I will take some pics of mine installed to help you.

  9. That is helpful to know that it went straight on the metal cargo floor. I see the holes in the base of the bed that are for these T bolts that you mention. I don't know exactly what a T bolt looks like so I will google that later.

The other brackets that I have seen on threads online is like a triangle metal bracket that sits on the sloping part behind the van where the fuel tank is. I am guessing then that these brackets are for an older Westfalia design? My van is a 72 Devon (just got it 2 weeks ago) and there is a metal shelf as you can see in the photo that is attached to the fuel tank area. It is rivited so looks like it is something to do with the original Devon interior?

The westfalia hinges do not have any springs, does that mean there are springs missing? The little spring loaded catches seem to be the wrong side of the little metal stud that they connect with.

I am definately missing those two metal brackets on the bottom of the base board of the bed that sit on the frame of the bed when in the bed position.

    It's definitely not westfalia.
Yes those small catch springs are the only springs. Try manipulating the hinges to get the catches the right side.

  11. Thanks guys. Yes any further photos with the base of the bed lifted etc would be helpful. Also as I'm trying to fit the rest of the interior with the small side seat with the table leg, wardrobe, sink unit and head locker. If you have these in your vans and are able to take any photos of the brackets or fixings that hold these up. I would be really interested to see what the fixings are under the side seat where the table leg is.

I must admit, this is very confusing to my small brain. lol

  13. Okay, I just found it so strange that both seem to have the spring catch put into the wrong position. I can see on one of the hinges the area where the pin (that fits in the spring catch) is has bent slightly.

  14. It doesn't help that the image is on its side. You can see the spring catch in the middle of the hinge. You can also see the back of the pin it connects with just below it on the lower hinge plate. If I try and move the spring catch down it effectively hits the back of the pin the opposite side it should. I think with a little bit of force it will clear and go past so that it is the correct side. I just find it strange that both are like this.

Yep, I see all that, it's like the catches are backwards, but this does ring a bell, the parts are riveted together - must be right!
Mine are different year but same idea, I built the bed but used Westy hinges and props. I'll take some catch action pics later.

Stonor Park VW show tomorrow so jump in the car and head over .There are always loads of Westie there .

  17. Ok thanks. I could take a video of the hinges moving and showing the position of the spring catch also. One thing I was thinking is that I had these hinges an bed sides posted to me together and maybe to package them smaller the person pushed the spring catch the opposite side.

If the bed base sat directly on the metal cargo floor then I would also be interested to know if the side seat and table leg panel also sat on the metal floor and even the sink and wardrobe unit?

  18. Zed did your Devon not also have this long bracket. I would have thought if it was a Devon thing your van might, unless a previous owner removed it first.

No it didn't as far as I remember but there are many versions of Devons. Mine had a sort of R bed, the kind without catches that does your back in.
I had look - can't see the catches at all so sorry no pics.
