  2. Well, after a lot of fiddling with a 1600 T1, I found that my van is best and most reliable using a 5998 litre diesel engine, massive torque levels, stress free journeys, virtually free fuel costs....

...shame its fitted to a breakdown truck.

If you fancy a needless challenge, you could go down the oxyboxer route:

I've had 3 new engines as they've cooked plus loads of issues with carbs, so I would have the same issues with a Subaru engine set up ?

  11. the issues you have is that you cant fix things. subaru will brake down too be sure of this

  12. Well I'm glad I went for a T5 then.

  13. Agree but surely a modern Subaru FI is more reliable than an old 40 yr old carb engine that has no service history etc ?
    ?

  17. Over the summer how many threads were started by people having had their air cooled engine break down and how many Subaru. and a fried clutch @Baysearcher doesn't count.

He's a troll. He won't deal in facts.

  19. They break maybe because they are being worked on by idiots? If a Subaru is worked on by an idiot maybe it wont last to long either, they lasted when they were first built !!!

As hinted at above, maintenance is a lot to do with it. If you have the ability, time and inclination, you can keep a Vw engine running forever.. but if you would rather fit and forget, then a Subaru makes sense as they only need minimal maintenance.
