I had no idea what I was doing when I did this quite successfully. This was my first repair, first time welding with a really cra.. welder, outside in the breeze, in winter.

I did do similar/worse cab door repairs too but as I'd worked around the van to those I had some idea by then. Not a lot though!

You may wonder why the strange shaped patch? Like I said, I didn't know what I was doing. lol
Turned out ok in the end.

It's the only way to learn. At that point, I didn't even know 1mm slitting discs existed! I was cutting with a 2.5mm one. Thusly I didn't cut scrap up and practice for more than about 2" of welding and thought sod it, I'll practice on the van.

Theres a whole lot of hole in hiding there.

And you find stuff out like where not to use seam sealer because it's too flexible, how to set fire to things (hint if your bottom feels warm while welding lying beside your bus turn around and check..)

    Be afraid……

    Be very afraid…..
Just joking, crack on and expect holes rather larger than you envisaged, but at least you will know the true picture.
I’m no welder but I’ve tackled he sills bits and pieces around and now doing the gutters. It’s quite rewarding if you tackle it methodically and aren’t in a hurry.

I've done a bit on my tailgate and that was relatively easy, even though my welding is still not good (read shxxt). The door is complex so I'm reading up first. I want to take the van out at the begining of March if possible, so I'll take the door off then and start the unpeeling!

  8. So glad you admitted that
When I started I did everything with a grinding disc
I was good at it though I could get quite a fine straight line

when I found the 1 mm cutting discs it was a revelation

  10. Valve adjustment, oil change.

I’ve been using the classic stuff from Halfords 20w 50 since I got my bus almost 10 years ago. No issues with it but based on some conversations with folks I will try out some 15w 40. I doubt I’ll be able to tell the difference but it’s the same price so I thought I’d give it a shot.

Strangely I did the same because the green zinc-rich stuff was out of stock. And I know its colder at the moment but it's running cooler - 80 instead of 90C ..

Took it out for a spin to test out the new twin carbs... it certainly sounds pleasantly 'meaty', and definitely wants to get going.
I'll still probably drive it like the old lady that I am, though ;)
The engine bay is looking extremely clean and tidy, with new paint, and neat wiring.

I completely forgot to take any!
I'm heading back down tomorrow (after collecting Henry the Traveller from his 100 mile service) so will remember to take some then (not sure if Clem will be ready for collection also, or just another burn around the Old Christchurch Road to check the tuning after it's been tweaked)

  16. Boot to the floor, Ms H!

You can enjoy the sight of your fuel gauge moving in the opposite direction to the speedometer

Alex had taken it for a spin prior to my arrival. Apparently 70 is now a comfortable speed !!!

  18. You will do 70 with ease. You've still got the original cooling arrangements, mind, so your oil might start getting a bit toasty...

We've got a slightly improved arrangement using the type 4 oil cooler, plus a velocity ring... so a bit better than stock hopefully. To be fair, I'm not in it for the speed, but it will be nice to occasionally overtake something!

  20. Ah, forgot about that. Should help. Trouble is, you can get carried away. Old Snotts can do a genuine 80mph, but things start getting a bit sweaty...
