  1. So is mine, and Aeroquip fits nicely. And my engine doesn't catch fire.

69719A91-4987-4D2B-85FE-98311BBB0634.jpeg FINALLY got it somewhere to live!
( put some sort of floor down yet, to lessen the condensation. I did put another Door wall, at the other end for better air flow).

Drove it out to the Rhinefield Ornamental Drive in the New Forest yesterday, went for a walk, had a picnic.

Returned home, took the pedal and belly pans off and routed the extra power feed for the heated windscreen along beside the wiring harness. Used a couple of the camping levelling ramps to lift up one side of the bus to get under.
Today finished the relay wiring, got on with wiring the timer.
Realised I had used MOSFETs to drive the relays that can easily direct drive the screen panels without relays.
I will leave the relays as it means I dont have to route 24 amps through the timer box.
Built up the circuit on Veroboard, plugged in the microcontroller board and the LEDs on the pushbuttons started pulsating as intended with the test firmware.

Need to calibrate the supply voltage sensing so it detects the alternator raising the battery voltage before it turns on the heaters and to provide a low voltage shutoff as well as a timer.

Drove it to the South Yorkshire transport museum. Got some nice comments and people wanting to take pictures. It drove well, the gear change problem from last time is sorted (new coupling) and enjoyed the little trip out.

  6. outdoorsy stuff... got muddy, chased rainbows, toasted a lovely van friend that passed around a fire. a magical time if year as the seasons run and places quite down. [IMG][IMG][IMG][IMG][IMG][IMG][IMG][IMG][IMG]

I have a meeting in Chatteris tomorrow which isn’t far from Cambridge but decided it would be better to camp nearby overnight rather than deal with rush hour traffic - lovely peaceful spot!

Decided to take a look at the carburettor - on Saturday and Sunday, it was running very rich off idle but idling perfectly at 14.5:1 which is almost the opposite of when the choke power wire is not connected .
Symptoms were closest to what happens when the float level is too high - but the needle valve is shutting at the correct point when I checked it.

Took the top off and noticed the power valve (larger slotted brass fitting with a pin sticking up, pushed down by vacuum on a diaphragm in the top of the carburettor via a rod) had unscrewed about half a turn letting fuel drip into the chamber under the float chamber. As I tipped fuel out of the float chamber, something bounced away.
It is a restrictor for the vacuum feed going to the power valve diaphragm from the throat of the secondary choke. It looks like it has been rattling around or just resting in there for a while. So out with the JB Weld round the edge to hold it in.. the tune of the carburettor uses this for wide open throttle enrichment.
It is a damper to smooth out pulses from the carburettor throat, so if it was loose I suppose the power valve might have also been opening too easily with pulses of suction.

I had checked the oil level in the oil bath air cleaner the other day, but it looks like quite a lot of the oil that left my engine the other day went via the stock diameter breather, and managed to fill up the air cleaner to the top mark for free, and quite a lot of spray then went back down the carburettor. . ending up with some oil in the bottom of the emulsion tube wells ... which came out when I tipped up the carburettor. I might tip some oil out of the air cleaner .

I dont think heated front windscreens were ever in the VW M codes options basket. The earlier Ricky Evans windscreens pulled 38 amps with both left and right panels on , the recent Chinese made ones pull 24 amps which is more reasonable.

We basically just did a dive into the Forest off the A31 down to the A35, missing Lyndhurst then went straight back up to the M27..

Gave it an oil change, as I've no idea how long the oil in there had been in. I wrote the mileage in the notebook that came with the van, where I put the mileage in when I fill up. I'd bought a sump gasket set, with new copper O rings, on Amazon, when they turned up I decided that a warm(ish) and dry day was too good to waste, if I'd put it off I might have ended up doing it in the rain.

I was a bit nervous tightening the little dome nuts that hold the plate on, as there didn't seem a lot of thread showing on the studs, but as the gaskets and copper rings compressed they seemed to tighten up OK. All was well when I started it up afterwards, plenty of pressure and no leaks.

If you must know, I put Morris Golden Classic 20/50 in, but please don't have a debate over it... ;)

The tidy up in the carburettor seems to have worked, mixture back to normal.

Back to pulling away crisply with 12.5:1 AFR when I put my foot down rather than just mushily in a will-it / wont-it style with the AFR gauge pegging over at 10:1 .. smoke signals territory

Fixed a really annoying gas leak on the propex and I didn’t even use any PTFE tape

  18. Fine plumber you'd make

  19. Just give them a nip up. If they weep, nip 'em a bit more.
