The clutch seems to be adjusted right now. The cable looked new but was at the end of the adjuster, so the job wasn't so simple after all. I notice from my newly arrived Bentley manual that there are longer and shorter cables for different years, so maybe that's the case here.

I found a small metal sleeve in my junkbox, along with a washer it took up enough slack to give me a range of adjustment again. I need to do a roadtest to check all is well, but it was snicking into first no problem on my driveway and there is much less play at the pedal.

I also found a disconnected heater flap cable, no pin so I used a tiny bolt and nut, let's see if it makes any difference (no heat detected yet in the cab, though that doesn't seem to be unusual).

  2. You may have to pack the clutch tube out with washers. It's in Haynes...somewhere.

  3. Check the front end of the cable, there’s a bracket that the cable attaches to that’s held on with a 17mm nut, it can be on backwards.
Should be positioned like a b not a d , moves the cable 20mm or so back or forward relative to the release arm!

Yes at 32 mph in second. And rolled down a gentle hill at 32mph in 4th later on..

Turned my 123 distributor from setting 0 to setting 9. Looks like setting 9 is the correct one for all late bays. Slightly different curve on paper - test drive gave slightly better grunt low down. Subtle difference though

Seriously, the thing to do at first is thrash it to bed the rings in. Ironic that of all times it sounds like you're babying it.

I was trying but theres a whacking great traffic jam north of where I live, to get to the motorway, no hills to speak of, all the rest of the roads are 30 limit, and the 60mph road is just about long enough to get to 55 before you run out of road...and I had to stop to let people across a narrow bit half way.

The rev counter told me I hit 4500 rpm..

Its civilised here on the south coast...

It's less about speed than full acceleration followed by full deceleration. 3rd is good. I know you know this but anyone reading thinking of babying their new engine... don't, and DEFINATELY don't let it sit idling ... but... if you have to let it idle or your local traffic forces you to, be sure to set the idle speed at 1,000 rpm or so, do not let it idle slowly. One more thing - ifyou find yourself on a motorway in the first few hundred miles, rather than constant 50mph, every now and again speed up to 60mph then take your foot right off and slow back down. That deceleration allows oil to be sucked up around the rings. The rings/barrels are all you are running in. Everything else runs on a film of oil.

I was flooring it then letting off .. but the environment wasnt a good place to do much.

Today I routed a fused wire from the leisure battery to the front of the bus (actually used the last wire from a bundle of four I had installed about 10 years ago for random purposes.. )

    Fog lamp.
    Fuel Solenoid.
    Oil temperature.
    Leisure power.

Tomorrow the stereo gets wired to it too.
At the moment its just a couple of charger sockets via a switch.

  17. More patching, bit of a trial fit (yes I know the sticky-out gutter is too long, this has been attended to).
