FFS....the new header will not fit. The pipes appear to have a larger 'arc' to them where they feed into the collector box and as such (especially the header from No4 cylinder) impedes on the engine support bar which will not allow the headers for No2 and No3 to 'mate'/connect with the heat exchangers. I also think the flange where the exhaust/back box connects is not at the correct angle and if connected the back box would impinge on the tow bar assembled.

Looks like 'Plan B' is now the only way and the welded up old one is going back on. I've already tried to put the exhaust bandage back on as I still need to protect the oil pipe.

And as I suspected......it's now raining again. So I'm now sat in the van lubricating my nuts ready for insertion using the only lubricant I have.

    Zed Gradually getting grumpier

No doubt designed for a Beetle = no support bar.
Top marks for expecting the worst and getting the old one patched up.

Both seem okay. I've synchronised them to see how well they keep time. The silver ring one was slightly slower over two days (25 minutes).
Just adjusted it slightly and will report back.

    What lubricant does one use?

This one came with a plug on the back but they are 3.2 mm male spades. Pulled some wire off an old PC power supply made a harness.
Cut out the fixing tag from sheet steel.

And replace the nuts on the spindles. One was split, the other was very stuff on the spindle.

Maybe its a bit more enthusiastic than the old, but this shouldnt have a cracking gear in it.

Good to hear that you have sorted it.
Is it up and running? Wasn't really sure if you would have a go at techenders.
The parking bit seemed like it might be awkward.
The replacement spindle nuts were a good find.

I had all the pieces at Techenders, and in fact used only tools I took to Techenders. But I had about 3 hours after a walk this morning so I thought I would have a go.
Parking wasnt hard : before I took the old motor off in parked position, I marked the arm location with paint.
To realign- I left the nut off the motor, powered up the parking power switch outer ring on the motor (top connection), started the motor by dabbing the motor run wire on the top connection, then moving it to the middle connection which was the parking switch output which includes the earthing to brake the motor. Ran that, then when it stopped put the arm back lined up with the paint.

I think the spindle nuts were from Classic and Commercial.

I've done some, sworn a bit (a lot), walked the dog, and am now returning to the job in hand. Cleaning all that grot is first priority!
