You'd know if your drums were out of round as the pedal would pulse enough to feel it, though if it got really hot it might not be as round as it was. It's not untypical that drums drag in one place - you need to back off the adjustment a bit or it's ye olde handbrake cable thing.

I reckon, as the handbrake is sorely lacking at the moment, that you could be right with this being the root cause (I'd like that to be it! wouldn't it be handy to just have one issue?!)
I'll back off the adjustment a smidge. The pedal wasn't pulsing at all. Hopefully I've not warped stuff

What am I expecting to see?

(A tussle?? Oh ye lord of the understatement!!)

Pull the handbrake on (carefully) with the drum off and take a look - if it's muchos easier it's probably not the cable. Now let it off, nip back out to ensure it's returned of off position. If not maybe the cable is a bit stuck but more likely (if it operates easily with the drum off) you need to just back off the adjustment, so the question is - when were the brakes last adjusted? - if you say "ages ago" then something has indeed gone wrong. If you say - oh the garage did it last week, then they've just been a little over adjusted which is actually quite easy to do.

  6. Could be wrong, but your brake shoes look a bit...dusty, as if they've never been touching the drums ie doing nothing.

Collar an assistant - perhaps a passing handsome young man? - and get them to gently step on the brake pedal, not too far. The shoes should move outwards. If they don't, summut's siezed somwhere, or the flexi hoses have collapsed.

Unlikely to find passing handsome strangers at this time of night. Could I be creative with some blu tack and see if a gentle touch of the brakes squashes it ?
There was dust in the drums, - but brake dust, not 'no one's cleaned here for years' dust, like in my house.

(If the pads weren't moving, surely the wheel would move freely and not get hot?)

  8. That's true. Maybe skip the pedal bit. Could try backing the star adjusters right off, drum on, then adjust the drums?

He has, but I suspect he's going to be very pleased with it. Those engines are going to run out at some point/cars all scrapped, I'd be stashing a spare in the garage.
I'd have done the 2.5L one personally - all that effort.

oops, only just seen this post.
Brakes were adjusted a year ago, so it isn't an over enthusiastic garage.
I've backed the adjusters off two clicks, and now the handbrake just comes out to it's full length and doesn't appear to be doing anything - but the brakes are no longer grinding when I rotate the wheel.
I've put it back together and had a bath and got my PJs on now.... it will wait for another day. Hopefully I've not messed anything up too badly.
I'll take it for a gentle spin after work tomorrow , round the block, just to check I've got brakes and that it's not pulling to one side or the other when I press the pedal.
The handbrake has been getting steadily more useless for months and I've been avoiding it. Looks like it's time to sort it out.

  15. If you're keen, do similar to the other side, then dive under the front and take up the slack on the cable adjuster under the floor. Six clicks and you're sorted

Don't do this in your jim-jams. You'll get grease everywhere.

About every 3 months as I take my bus to Bristol, I do the rear brake adjustment. If it has to hold on a 1 in 3 for a hill start it has to be spot on...
The problem with skimming a brake drum to make it round is that its making it thinner where it has warped in. So its even more likely to warp in future.
I would just replace the drums once they get too uneven, but it also has to be said I replaced the OG drums on mine because oo look they sell brake drums in 2010, and then warped those replacements by overdoing the adjustments ( not turning the wheel a complete turn so I tightened the screws on the low point of the drum) . Went back to the OG drums still stashed away and used them until the outer thin lip that goes over the backing plate started rusting off (MOT advisory , 2021) Now on new drums still actually round, so I am able to get the adjusters so its just dragging for a full rotation. Handbrake works well..
I find I do the brake drum adjusters almost twice as often as the tappets.

Sounds like the culpret to me - seized cable which has now caused you to set the shoes wrong. They are reasonably cheap for what they are - I'd replace both.

Been doing a fair bit the last couple of weeks, and making some long overdue progress, got the underside painted in Raptor today, which feels good, I’m turning a corner now!

Will have the suspension on in a few days time when it’s hardened up enough, then hopefully back on it’s wheels which hasn’t happened in about 3 years!
