The All New, New "What have you done to your Bay today" thread.

  1. Fitted a new leisure battery and finished the paintwork touch up, including the front valance, a scrape on the rear wheel arch, the hook up cover, the folded seams on the four corners and some spots on the front steps; two top coats, went on well :)

  2. What did you paint with?

  3. Did a few more little jobs and took it for a slightly longer drive.

Nothing to mine, but gave @paneuropaul a hand to do this.

  7. Given up on air dried stuff, bought a Gerson mask, enclosed goggles and 'disposable' full set of overalls with hood, I look like I've just been to Salisbury.

I used 2k-in-a-can , pull the pin in the bottom and you get enough time to do about 2 or 3 coats before it becomes a doorstop. About £20 a can, but I'm not ready yet to try a gun and compressor, just yet.

Here's the rear valance. A nice bit of over spray on my new heat shield, but nobody sees that.

  8. Sticking a VW badge on it, doesn't make it right! ;)

    Looks great :)

  9. I agree. I thought the badge filled the gap, but actually it looks a bit rubbish. I'm going to remove it. When my arms and hands start working again.

  10. Expunged all trim clips and rubber bungs from my cab door cards. I hate the bendy, scratchy things. Now they’re gone, replaced by black flange head self tappers

  11. Did you prime it?

  12. Agreed. First thing I bought were door cards, clips and bungs…first things I bunged were the clips!

    I’m going to rivnut mine.

Yep, the motor drew 16 amps and the fuse body melted. I would suggest looking in boxes of junk tbat came with your bus for the red ceramic fuse bodies down with the 12 inch bits of cotton string, time expired double sided sticky tape and a box of matches, rusty nail scissors and a water damaged headlamp relay.. .
I would have recommended Frost Auto Restorations for the ceramic fuses but the pack of 8A ones I bought were a mix of plastic and ceramic.

I checked again on mine and the second down position is actually just park again.

  15. Yes, then wet and dry, then panel wipe and finally tack cloth and a bit more panel wipe.

PS most of these were paint chips, or the dreaded rust, usually the first caused the second.

I'll probably blend the edges with the polisher after removing any over spray and the odd run, or blemish, with 2000 grit wet and dry.

Funnily enough I was thinking about this as I lay in bed this morning, listening to the birds singing, and putting off getting up to deal with the drivers window that has (yet again) become detached.
I don't mind stripping down the door handles, window winder etc, but it's that blasted trim clips that make the job an absolute arse.
All the other interior panels are held on with black flange self tappers, so why on earth I decided to stick with the clips on the cab doors is beyond me!
Time for a change I think!

@snotty When I did the others (many years ago) I just had a selection box of the screws, long since gone: to save me unscrewing stuff and measuring, what size did you use please?

Sorry, but clips are best and worth dealing with.
VW did clips on every panel had you bought a microbus, it's the converters that couldn't be bothered - even Westfalia but they all retained the clips in the cab doors.
Clips, clips, clips, I love those clips. :)

Bah! There's always one that is just in the wrong place, and then there's the other one that falls out just as I've got the other 22 sorted! In the past I've been tempted to buy the ABS ones and cover them with my existing vinyl as it seems to be the hardboard on mine that causes the clip issues. Maybe it's just a mm or so too thick....

  19. Clips are great, and look the best by far, but I found that there's clips, and there's clips. The last set I bought were pants, a bit like the brake fluid reservoir cap that had no thread on it .

Where did you/do you source decent quality clips, Steve?

  20. If the hardboard has swollen up thru the damp getting past the membrane, the clips can be a right faff :(

I tried to rescue my door cards where the damp had got to them using PVA and heavy books/ weights to flatten them back into shape, it was marginally successful but the clips still don't behave where the hardboard backing is damaged.
