Seriously I only did 12 miles. I'll plan a decent run for the next trip. I really need to get it properly warmed up and do a bit of mileage to complete my shake down.

The cover tin will have been butchered by peeps levering against it to adjust the belt tension – not you obviously.
EDIT: I should have looked at the other posts before replying.

Both you and @zedders did not realise that my middle name starts with an M for Muppet :p. But obviously I never used the tin to adjust the tension...honest guv!

Brought her home from the auto gearbox specialist.. can believe how different she drives ... despite no obvious signs, the gearbox was close to expiring.

  6. Off with his gears! Resistance to the mighty deWalt is futile. Futile!

Followed by a refreshing scrub with Scotchbrite. A bit scored and careworn, but everything passes the fingernail test

This is looking really good apart from the false end float from bearing cock up?

  8. It's not bad. In a perfect world, the crank journals could do with another 0.25mm grind, but that's not going to happen. A good Scotchbriteing has taken off all the high spots. Was a replacement (used?) engine from Vege, and whoever owned it previously obviously never changed the oil. The end bearing is mystery.

Case is battered, but fine, tappets are absolute scrap - they're convex . Might have pushed the cam past the point of no return. Will try my spare cam in when I get some new bearings, see if it passes the "case walk-out" test. Existing cam has a different (I suspect) tooth grind.

    <edit> Concave!

When you consider that a typical type-1 engine stripped for rebuild... mostly goes in the scrap bin, I think you've got a good one there.

  10. Hopefully true. It's got two new(-ish) Autolinea heads that I put on about 10 years ago after a plug came out with a helicoil attached (why do you do that, Vege?) Pistons'n'rods are fine, jugs have all their fins and no wear lip, even see the original honing.

    Fingers crossed.

They’re supposed to be convex; do you mean they’ve worn concave?

You can reface them anyway. There was a real problem with new soft adjuster screws a few years back that mushroomed within a few hundred miles. I'd keep them safe just in case.

  13. My mistake - finger trouble!

They’re worn concave and stopped rotating. You can see wear marks from the cam on them. New ones on the way.

  14. I recall Rob used to do that. He had a tray of about 20 of them at his place, marinating in…what? White wine sauce? I won’t chuck the old ones out yet.

    Who knows!
He refaced my cam followers too and "people" say that's a no-no, which I'd agree with if you or I were tempted to try, but he used to spend entire days refacing hundreds of followers so I guess he has the knack. What he told me was he found if you didn't consciously try to make them convex, they just naturally come out right... but he's done thousands even if it was mostly 40 years ago.
All I know is my refaced tappets and refaced followers and old cam seem to be just fine. :)

It's a pity the likes of him are dying out, there can't be many left now with that experience under their belts. One of my main specs was to reuse as many old VW parts as possible. The only parts to have given any trouble are the new barrels, but no doubt that's just the silly size of them.

  16. Tis a shame. All that knowledge lost.

Rob did the same to my followers, and they’re fine. Wish I could remember what his nose-end oil mod was…

I have an idea he just made the hole bigger but don't quote me.
