I took the engine and gearbox out this afternoon, so I could change the nose and input shaft seals. That went well. This picture is after A LOT of oil and crud was washed off with panel wipe and a toothbrush..

Then I took the nose cone off found that the big bearing at the front has been walking around and eating metal... It goes round when I rub it to wipe off oil too, so its spinning in the case.

So its replacement gearbox time or a do-over on this one. Not that I like it that much , its always been whiny and reverse only just there. ..

As I dont know what my negotiations with gearbox vendors will provide on Monday, I decided to refit the seals anyway, so it stops leaking over the clutch. If I have to put it back in, it will be better, and not lose 0.1L of oil in a year, smeared all over the underside of the engine.

Also put the shroud that guides the throwout bearing in, so it has a drain hole at the bottom, rather than delivering the oil to the centre of the clutch. It also has a drain hole at the top.

  3. That bearing does have a deep desire to go walkies, and the thin rib in the nosecone isn’t up to the job of stopping it. Woukd a new nosecone solve the problem?

Hmm. It would stop a part of the problem, but the bearing seems a bit too loose in the case now.

I have decided to put it back in the bus, as there isnt time to get it done properly before TE, and drive it to Wales and Techenders in a couple of weeks in a 500 mile circular drive. I have done the seals so that should stop it dripping on the clutch from time to time.

Then book it into Bears for a rebuild.
I quite like the idea of the Bears steel plate to hold it all together.

I would rather pay somebody a lot of money for fixing what is wrong than pick another lottery entry from the pile of gearboxes from e.g. TES. I know they come with a warranty, but if I am spending £800, I want to spend it on definite things.
After all , 10 years and 80k miles back I paid £650 for a "recon" gearbox that worked although reverse has always been notchy, and it always whined worse than the old one, and one of the drive cups was wobbly..

I didnt start the gearbox work today until about 2pm because I spent a couple of hours changing an ABS sensor on my 307SW, including the bit where the jack went up and the car came down around it crunching with brown flaky stuff. New sill panel on order, finally have to start welding my Peugeots.

So I had to find another jack to lift the suspension up to the point I could get the wheel back on later. And to stop the jack continuing up.

Put the engine and gearbox back in. Reverse works at least.

Today I have transferred a trip speedometer from a LHD binnacle and placed it in my RHD binnacle.....I'm about to refit it in my camper..... but I hate those darn binnacle clips...especially the ones near the heater controls.

  12. Taking the glovebox out helps.

The way the clips are made you'd think you could click the darn thing into place - there must be a technique, it's mental to have to struggle like we do, but when I've tried, the screws aren't quite long enough. I miss my early - no silly clips.

  14. I can usually manage to just clip mine into place but maybe my clips have become deformed from years of me doing so. Screws out so that they're just holding on the first threads, get them all aligned properly, place the binacle over the aperture with the bottom clips over the lip and then it's just a sharp knock with the heel of the hand to clip the top in. Tighten the screws and jobs a goodun

Oh the times I've tried and failed to do that, sending clips in among the dash wiring to be lost forever!

  16. I've got the hang of refitting the instrument panel:
Refitting the instrument panel clips was made easier thanks to @BayCreamPuff over on the samba

They are spring clips. It's pretty easy and definitely doesn't require sticking your hand up under the dash.

Pull out the instrument panel. Attach the clips with the rounded part pointed up on the top and down on the bottom. you can leave the bottom ones a tiny bit loose.

Push instrument panel back into the hole on the dash. It will snap right into place. Tighten the bottom screws.

Bought it a new throttle cable Bowden tube and a new clutch cable Bowden tube.

    Booked leave for Techenders.

That's the theory. In practice you might get that far but before you tighten them they spin around and miss the dash. You can show me how easy it is sometime Paul. :)

  19. Took her for a good run to get her properly warmed thru, she didn't leak, well not out of that darn rocker cover, anyway :)

Beautiful evening for a run out.
