Well if we're taking photos of stuff in primer, I did these last weekend on that day the sun shone. Just waiting for the spare time and reasonable weather for the top coat (Rustoleum silver enamel)...

  5. Looking great Iain
I'd look around for some tidy venting but not the usual 'clunky' caravan park stuff , centralise the fridge , make up some cover pieces of ply to fill the gaps above and below then fit the vents to the covers and fix. You could even just drill vent holes under the sink to allow the hot rising air to vent into the void around the sink ??

Glad youve kept the grill btw , a total necessity in my eyes and the Fellows cooker just looks right - so much better than a modern SMEV jobbie

Took alternator and fan off this morning. Front bearing completely seized and the internals have been cooked; can't tell which came first. Strange gouge marks on the front cover of the alternator so something has moved or is in the wrong place. :(

  9. I know it`s no help whatsoever but i had a similar problem with mine , something happened within the altenator , it started chomping away at the altenator case , destroyed the top pulley and shredded the belt ...
Cutting a long story short i was on my own in Austria en route to Croatia with some crappy breakdown cover which wasn`t worth the paper it was written on

Obviously pre internet days when people actually went on adventures and didn`t feel the need to document every time the obligatory vanlife dog farted , i managed to limp to a campsite about 15 miles away , luckily the site owners` son was into his Golfs so knew enough places to get some second hand bits but no altenator . With nowhere to drop the engine we found an engineering shoppe who kindly knocked me up a spacer for the shaft and hold the altenator pulley away from the housing - it was worth a shot and actually worked !!

The van got me to Croatia and back without any further issues , in fact that was about 2003 and i haven`t looked at it since - maybe i should ...

Good luck with the fix

  10. Gasket swappage, see if I can cure the air leak. Spindle seems fine, so ruling that out as a cause for now, at least. I am assuming when fitting the linkage, what I should have done was a gasket free run first to test fit everything, before installing the gaskets and buttoning everything up. I didn't so the gaskets were on and off like a bad romance.

Edit, also found the usual fuel line splitting as the line turned the corner into the carb. Cohline on order tomorrow.

I've had the same gaskets between carb and heat spacer since I've had the carbs! Two engines and 10 years later the carbs have been on and off more often than a tarts drawers.
Only reason I swapped the ones between manifold and spacer was I changed manifolds and the imprinted shapes didn't match. They just sit there being reused over and over now too. Not cheap and there are 8 if you have heat spacers. :)

  13. You'll have to tell me where you got them, so far it seems to be much better with the new ones on and has passed the brake cleaner test :)

  14. This arrived yesterday off the Samba classifieds. Part of what I enjoy about working on my bus is to make rusty crusty parts look and work like new. This will all come apart for cleaning and a trip through the blast cabinet. I need to start taking more “before” photos.

Stuck some points and a condenser in a spare SVDA,
put it in the engine and timed it with the clamp on it ready to go. Its a bit worn so recently it had an Accuspark in it, as the magnet doesn't care if the distributor lobes are worn. Engine runs. Its a get me home spare.

Then found the advance adjustment on the timing light had failed. Fortunately it was stuck around 0 degrees..

It worked Ok on the way back from TE... poked around it cant see anything wrong so I have ordered a replacement for one of the chips in it, as it has about 10 degrees advance rather than 60 degrees..

Well that was harder than expected - what isn’t, I wonder!

Pipework serves several functions; helps locate the Devon Poptop perfectly each time it’s closed, can hang a mirror off it, and will have additional removable bits used usefully elsewhere. Oh, and cable routing for a light when the roof is up.

And I didn’t totally screw it up, so everything works together.
