They were! With a few lambs for entertainment.

Oh, and a couple of Chinooks took off right nearby. Awesome things.

    New coupler fitted.

Would have been a 30 minute job if it weren’t for badly cast new one, had to wind the grub screw back and forth a few times, should have tapped the thread out really.
And the shaft hole needed a bit of reaming out to fit.

Here’s the old one complete with bodge. If I’d gone for a second cable tie it would have been easier to get reverse!

Old one says made in Germany.
Bit of a bodge on the original pin, whatever was on the other end fell off.

Changed the steering idler pin after making a new tool , a metal sleeve on an old pin.
Used the jack and the weight of the bus to push the old bushings through. Needed a bit of help with a hammer once or twice, used hammer to knock the new bushings in as movement was more controlled.

Took about 2 1/2 hours including spending ages lining up the bolt. Then I took out the extra top seal and replaced the old one in the arm... popped together really easily then...

  12. Today I cleaned the inside of the poptop, anyone with a Westy knows they have a flock finish inside to prevent condensation dripping but over the winter the cold and damp can cause unsightly black mildew to form. An hour or so scrubbing with spray mildew and mould remover and it's gone, very satisfying and the added bonus of being a job that can be done lying on the bed:thumbsup:

  13. Decided to investigate the slop in my Empi gear shifter, I was sure it was quite minimal when I fitted it new back in the early noughties.

Turns out most of the play is coming from the front shift rod bush (earlier pin type) but I could also see movement between the nylon blocks and the frame of the shifter itself. The rivets holding the assembly together are aluminium and over the years must've stretched and worn. The movement down at the ball joint was only a fraction of a mm but of course up at the knob it was contributing towards maybe 1cm of the total play.

So I drilled out the rivets and after a thorough clean and re-grease put it back together with nuts and bolts. Surprisingly there was hardly any wear apparent...

I would've preferred slightly longer cap head bolts but was making use of what I had and these stainless M6 x 20's are just long enough to engage the inserts in the nylocs. All feels very smooth with no slop now .

I went on the pull the front shift rod out and extract the old bush, a new one's on it's way from JK. I measured the bore in the old bushing at 11.3mm...

It was difficult to get the calipers on the pin as I was being lazy and didn't drop the front pan but I was getting a nominal 10mm which might be about right?Hard to say how worn the pin is if at all, I really ought to drop that pan and get some better measurement. Looks better in the flesh than in the pic though...

I'm sure it'll all feel much better with a new bush anyway.

Out of interest I had a quick look through 'the folder' and found the invoice from the last time I changed that bush. November 1998, cost £3.83. 22 1/2 years and 40,000 miles later and they're now £4.70 (with TLB discount)...

Can't really grumble with that .

Cool. I’ve never changed mine, but it’s still a lot better than the original.

Oh no ! now I am going to have to look at mine. On mine, the rectangular limit stop cutout had worn enough to make gear changes hard, and spotwelded parts had fallen off .. But I havent checked the rivets. But thats what 85000 miles since 2010 does..

Mike, (or anybidy else) would you know if the type being sold by Alan Schofield is OK (screenshot below) or is it better to order the CSP ones from JK or Coolair

The Schofield's coupler looks like it is welded in the right places, and it looks like it is actually a genuine part.

I fitted some waterproof white mains LED indicators under the sockets on the bus, so I can tell if the mains is going in and the mains is coming out (either direct or from the inverter). 20210423_163309.jpg
