Just pulled into a car park to go for a bike ride and couldn’t get reverse.
    Random success on other gears.
    Gear stick gone sloppy.
Suspecting the square bolt on the rod linkage I dived underneath.
That was fine, rod still sloppy.
Then I discovered the square UJ type thing at the back had pretty much exploded, one side had fallen off and the other was hanging loose retained only by the last few mm of the pin . Yikes!

Found a cable tie and a rubber bung off my bike pump and threaded the tie through the pin and around the UJ.
    All working again, thank god!

    Off for a ride now.
Hope it gets me home later!

I assume it’s not too much of a ball-ache to change...?

Fortunately GSF does the EMPI ones, best though is to take the nice urethane plastic bits , the horrible rolled tube, the self tapper screw and washer out of the EMPI shift coupler kit, and fit those to the original cage.
Reason - the original cage part is welded to the collar on the gearbox shaft , the EMPI and general aftermarket cages are swaged together (and start to rotate against the collar screwed to the gearbox shaft after a while).
If you insist on the EMPI cage, it needs some welds to make sure the cage doesnt wobble loose from the collar.

Biggest hassle is getting the screw done up as you have to use a spanner on the head of the screw as you cant reach the screw with a screwdriver.
All doable lying under the bus with everything else in place.

  3. It’s a faff, but not that difficult. I’d recommend the CSP coupler.

From the little I could see/feel, one of those red plastic bits has disappeared.
I seem to recall a replacement coupler was fitted not so long ago, maybe when I had the engine replaced. So I suspect it’s a crap part that’s in there now.

  5. Great fix - well done

I’m just about to see if my bodge will get me home first. I’ll look them up when I get back. Hopefully without the big yellow taxi...

I put his hubcaps back on.
And replaced the seal around the number plate light as it was hanging off.
I need to take my insurance 'agreed value' photos tomorrow, so I am indeed pulling out all the stops ;)

    Thanks @mikedjames @snotty.

I can get this one from Heritage in the morning (it’s half an hour away):

Looks a bit more solid than the folded tin one -what’s left of it - that’s in there., can’t be more than 3 years old!
    Look any good to you?

  12. Looks good if it’s got a cast cage instead of the pressed falling-apart ones. V similar to the CSP one. Worth checking the diameter of your shifter shaft to see if it fits in the coupler hole.

I’ll be checking that later Rich
    Edited:
However, I shan’t be getting this one by the look of the small print:

Even the EMPI ones work if you have a welder..
My OG cage was a bit twisted from earlier experiences with one of the other 19 POs so I straightened it in the end and put it back.
The CSP one looks like it uses proper machined parts instead of rolled tin. I would put some Loctite on the little screw that goes into the pin just in case...

Decided to take a drive to JK for the CSP one so I can fit it this afternoon. Just waiting outside the collection door.

  20. PS Buy a bottle of blue Loctite for the screw while you’re out.
