I have discovered with my Halfords "lock" that its entirely possible to turn the steering wheel with it on if I hold it up..
Sometimes I cant be bothered to unlock it if I am just shuffling the bus on the drive.. its the side effect of having a big steering wheel..

There was a 5g difference between the heaviest and lightest pistons. After a day of careful drilling and dremelling they are within 1g - which is about as accurate as the kitchen scales go. And I'm shattered

There's about 6g of piston there... and a cigarette butt :D

I'm not sure why you did it all like that when there's a special bit for chopping off first as someone (deefer?) posted a photo of when you were discussing it prior? [Edit: it was @Gooders )]

  7. Fair's fair, @Norris might have missed the point of the sacrificial shoulder, but kudos is due a) job is done b) even the other fella had to look inside the piston crown for material.

Yes that did sound a bit know-all, but when I'd seen the thread I thought it so obvious it didn't need words, but it looks like it did. Agreed I doubt 5g would come from there alone.

  9. More camping paraphernalia than work on the Bay, but at the last TE my solar lights wouldn't switch on, a quality light string spoiled by a poor quality PCB :(

A couple of clip leads meant we got two evenings before the batteries lost charge.

I decided to save what I could, rather than throw away and start again.

One Hammond box, IP whatever rated, one triple 18650 battery holder and some sundries and a USB battery charger and I am back in business. Have to see how this solution works out, not the most complex of jobs, but very satisfying, nonetheless; especially so when it's way too cold outside to work on the Bus.

Nope, I didn't notice that at all. It probably would have saved me a lot of time if I had known

Definitely a head start, it's not something I knew about either until I saw that photo and investigated. I've been lucky in the past any pistons or rods I've bought have all been within 1g.

Disappointing for "The West" that AA pistons can and do manage it and Mahle can't or don't bother.

I put the steering wheel back up the right way up this time and rotated it a bit so a) the indicators self cancel and b) the instrument displays arent permanently blocked from my sight line by the steering wheel spoke.

Also found that the C shaped metal plates that hold the two halves of the early style switch assemblies against the column are actually meant to be put in the right places.
Three of them are smooth on their inner diameter, and one has a "pip" on it. And there is a slot in the steering column tube for it to engage in. That one with the pip goes nearest the steering wheel and on the left..
I also flattened them with a hammer to give them a bit more grip, as all the sliding around while misassembled on my column had burred them slightly. And had to find one that pinged off when I hit it with my hammer...

Very disappointing that I had to take that much material out to get them balanced. What took me all day would have taken a couple of minutes on a milling machine in the factory.

Just to recap, the original weights were 495, 494, 490 & 492 grams. The 3 "overweight" pistons now all weigh in at 491g.

I'm just glad that I have a pillar drill so that I could set the depth plunge.

And I ache from the dremelling!

  14. I am always impressed by those who make a living porting engine heads, it must be blummin hard graft. The Bug's heads are ported and done to match the manifolds, I not looking forward to that job, if it ever needs doing.

  15. I go rough and ready.. felt tip gasket outline and knock all the big lumps out of the way with a finger sander... bit of roughness helps with the mixing ..

  17. I used to find it quite therapeutic , bike (not car/van) heads so much smaller but very rewarding when things go well

  18. More Polo-wrangling today, nothing on the Bay.

  19. Spring loaded roller blinds.
I bought them from here in 2017:

    https://www.gbinteriors.co.uk/acatalog/Spring-Loaded-Roller-Blind-Kits.html

At the time they were the only supplier I could find for 120cm.

Are you thinking of installing some? If so, I have advice.
