Touched up wheels where the hub caps chip the paint off, PO has sprayed them with little or no primer
Fitted new Mobilcool coolbox come fridge , old one packed up at Techenders :(
Repaired 400 mm gash in my Maypole cover, neighbour caught corner of rear bumper with tyre ! luckily no damage to bumper.
Washed and polished van with Collinite, then refitted cover which was fun in a strong wind and freshly polished roof !.. IMG_20200921_175054.jpg IMG_20200921_180836.jpg

My garage type charger broke. It's held together with security head self tappers and I don't have the right bit.

I've been doing too much messing and not enough driving and my battery needed perking up. With nowhere to hook up the bus I had to uninstall the Ctech one and take out the battery. Reinstalling the cable will not be so easy...it was wired into the mains fuse and I was in a hurry...the wire was neatly routed through the fuel tank compartment.

I am glad you found somewhere else to keep your bus, so the story can continue.

After doing the sliding door, I decided to check my ignition coil and distributor collection. All 4 of my coils are 2.5 to 3 ohms , whether Bosch blue, Bosch black or the original wierd one. One of my Bosch coils sounds like its not 100% full of oil but they are all genuine Bosch with 211 or 214 prefix part numbers.

The points distributor ran the same with all of the coils.

So I tried the Accuspark distributor that let me down on Monday - the engine started with a bit more difficulty and ran, almost as though it was firing properly every other firing.

One thing I noticed when I took the Accuspark unit off the base plate is that seems that although the locating peg fitted in the hole in the distributor base plate, there was a small gap under the base of the Accuspark unit at the other end to the screw, and all that was conducting heat was a ridge of silicone grease. Almost like the base plate isnt quite flat.

So the Accuspark unit is now in dissection phase, I shall try to add to my schematic sketch. It was working sort of but I dont trust it any more. At this rate I will end up making my own copy using the magnet ring from the Accuspark and a Hall effect sensor. Stick the switching unit outside on a heatsink . Maybe even use the Accuspark as this time I havent lost the wires and sensor completely ... Its only potted in silicone so it was easy to strip out of its housing using wire cutters.

Uses an Allegro AH44E Hall effect sensor. Which runs off 5v
And an ON Semi ISLV3040D IGBT switching transistor.
Although somebody had done a quick whizz with the sander on the parts, they missed everything except the dual comparator chip..

Tried another distributor with an older Accuspark in it and this one seems to run better.

Having previously refurbished the drivers seat and the front bench seat I decided it was time to have a look at the rear bench seat.

The stuffing was looking a bit tired and the seat squeaked and creaked when sat on.

Got the old cover and seat padding off..

I discovered that 40 years of South African bottoms and 5 years of English bottoms have taken their toll on a couple of the springs..

    and both cross braces..

I think I can weld the cross braces but sorting the springs is going to be a bit trickier.

I found sanding them, wrapping them in steel wire to hold the ends together and then basically melting the steel wire onto them with a MIG welder actually worked.

    Thanks Mike.

I’ve ordered a short length of steel tube with the correct id and was going to try and join the broken ends inside the tube.

I was also planning on spacing the springs out along the seat as the broken ones are adjacent to try and avoid over stressing them.

Binding them in wire sounds like a good idea too.

These seats seem hard to come by so a repair of some kind seems the only option.

Drove it down to the workshop for a day on the bug.
Had noticed a bit more play in the steering last week, and then noticed an odd squeak when turning at low speeds so had a look under.

Turns out the steering box wasn't bolted tightly to the chassis! Swear I torqued it up when I reassembled it all; oh well all tightened back up now.

The yard where I rent my workshop have started restricting the hours we're allowed down there now which is a bit of a problem for me as I'm usually a weekend/evening warrior (restricted to 8-6 Monday to Saturday).
The banger racer boys pee'd off the neighbours.
Trying to bring bits home that I can work on to keep the momentum going.
