Mine were too so I used a spacer above the sandwich plate and ran the cooler hoses under the pushrod tubes. The only problem was the spacer had a double O-ring, one just inside and the other just outside the joint face on the crankcase adapter, it held for a few miles then dumped all the oil on the road - how I laughed. Luckily, I saw the pressure dropping and stopped before any damage was done.

My snail fan must be well behaved, it’s never made a mess.

I did somebody elses type-4 using a plate that had vertical ports to replace the filter. Long sweep 90 attachments sent the lines forward just under the bottom tin to a filter on the chassis and cooler.

That’s a good solution. I tried to use banjo fittings on the sandwich plate but there just isn’t enough room.

Plastic marine engine room ventilation fans are designed to blow fresh air into the bilges of petrol powered boats to clear the fumes before you separate the hull and deck moulding by turning the ignition key after a bit of a petrol leak.

They are made of thermoplastics and are not designed to be pumping hot air. If the air being sucked by your heating system ever actually manages to exceed 65 degrees C, added to the heat generated by the motor, it will melt. They all will . It is a futile battle.

Its why VW pushed cold air through on the type 4 not sucked it through. Use a metal fan.

    Mines bare metal Jamie.

I don’t think they’re meant to be painted for the reasons you’ve discovered.

I put a bit of Vaseline on my filler cap to cure excess stiffness ;)

Mine is unpainted, and sealed to the bodywork with plenty of black sealant outside where the seal of the filler cap touches the metal, to avoid risk of water getting in.
This covers the exposed zinc plated metal and the screws with a layer of something soft and easy to remove.
Body is painted without the filler in place... As its all covered by the filler cap it doesnt show.

Usually we need more power. What you want is an intermittent wipe relay on the fourth position of the wiper switch.

The switch may have four positions but the locking peg hasn’t been removed. Mine has slow, slower, off and every now and again.

  17. ^as above, you may have a small peg in the switch that stops the fourth position.

  18. No, it wouldn't ;)
