Is this the nut end of the upper starter motor D-bolt? I always thought it was one of the bolts that holds the engine to the bell housing…. Maybe does the same job
Was going to have a go at changing the starter motor bush, looking a big challenging with engine in though. Don’t think I’ll be able to get a line of sight .
Thats why they made phones with LED lights .. turn the flash on in movie mode and point it down the hole . And with the starter out of the way you can see into the bushing hole from an angle fairly easily anyway.. take out heater concertina tube to provide more room. Support starter with string dont drop it like I did so the big wire ripped out of the crimp connector...
It’s possible if you’ve got a neck like ET. Pull the old one out with a tap, knock the new one in with the starter mounting bolt with a nut on the end.
Yep, saw that neat trick on a previous post. I’ll give a go . I’ll start the neck strengthening and flexing exercises now
If the receiving bush was causing periodic slow turnover, would you expect to see any witnesses marks on the shaft end? Can’t see any… looking pretty old too - might need a new one. (I checked all wiring out, new gearbox strap and fitted hot start relay, but still intermittent slow cranking)
You should know better than to post stuff like that on here Looks like a nice original Bosch - going to be much better than any Chinese job. I'd try it again with a new, well lubricated bush snort. If it's still slow, worth getting or refurbed. Or...GSF used to sell refurbed starters made from original Bosch parts, so you could hand it in as a core.
Mi Yep, Might be an idea handing it in. Thing that’s putting me off keeping this one is I noticed a receipt from the last owner and it was from local place that refurbs starters. So someone’s probably paid for this already and it not worked
Sometimes totally ok. Sometimes hardly at all. Hot/cold doesn’t matter. Sometimes very slow. Usually a very very slow crank to start with. Second or third crank it speeds up and always starts. Never any solenoid clicks heard

I’m liking the look of that Does it fit in place with the VW D-bolt? Is the spade connector there too as not obvious in web photos?
