Top line, there's not a lot in there, you need it full to the top mark.

You told me that at the last techenders so I fitted 8 herrings instead of the foam seal and I've only just got the smell out of the bus.

 Well, actually I couldn't even get herrings so I got some blubber off that whale that ran aground in Norfolk.

  5. With the engine hot - a few minutes after you`ve turned it off .
Top mark if it`s cold ...

  6. Really??? Oh ok - so this was the situation a few months back [IMG]

I topped up so that now it is just over half way between those lines on the dipstick...Because I was worried about putting in too much as that can be disastrous too huh.

Are you telling me that after all the worry about putting in too much oil, that I might be starving my poor engine of oil?! Ffs I'm not cut out for this!!

  7. Don`t be worried - that`s fine . Change it for 20/50 and see what happens ...

  8. That's almost on minimum!

It's not disastrous, but as the heads are air and oil cooled it does help to keep it up to the top line. Change oil to 20/50 mineral, fill up to top line and see what happens.

He's right. pic hadn't materialised when I answered...

  11. Yup, that was what I found the first time I checked.... I now check weekly and it's just over halfway ... But if it's meant to be at the top line I'll put some more in!!

  12. Ok, so clearly I've been cautious and not put enough in - slightly embarrassed face! That photo isn't what it is now - it's now just over halfway (cold).

So if I'm putting the 20/50 in, do I need to take old oil out first?

    Yes, afraid so.

  14. That's fine, I'll ask the garage to show me the first time, I'm going up there a week tues... In meantime I'll top up with my sae 30 tomo and see if that sorts out red light!

  15. I'd like to change my name on this forum so that when I meet people they don't realise that it's me asking the stupid questions and making the stupid mistakes!!

  16. make sure vans cold and level then put a bit at a time in until your just below the top mark 5mm or so .

Yes top up with what you have. Is the garage vw air-cooled savvy?

  19. I really hope it does but doubt it . The weather is still cold meaning the engine is being well cooled - imagine what summer temps will do ...
Just a thought , the garage had the engine out . Get them to check the cooling flaps aren`t stuck closed ??

    :hattip:

  20. Thank you lasty, I'll ask them. I honestly wouldn't be surprised if this is something I've done tho - like not put enough oil in! So if it's halfway on the dipstick when cold, it's probably on minimum when warming up!! My poor baby!
