They can not possibly have been thick enough not to know about the breather, I know a lot of mechanics and they are not stupid people. Therefore they assumed you wouldn't know and were content for you and yours to breath a haze of oil fumes.

    Or

    They are really dim.

Either way, not looking good is it? I'm against encouraging such "garages" by giving them work.

And your engine runs too hot, maybe they don't know how to set the timing either and it's 7.5 degs too advanced because they assumed the timing mark is tdc mark. Shame you're missing Techenders.

  4. Hmm. I asked them over the phone when they couldn't see the van - they were trying to remember... And I think they were trying to reassure me as I'm clearly quite anxious about the van....It's in for MOT Tuesday so I might see what they say if I ask them in person? I also don't really understand what it is we are taking about - im not entirely sure where this pipe is meant to be - so I'll read up about it. Surely they are more likely to want to take money off me then tell me somethings fine??

  5. Engine runs too hot? Can you explain that to me?

  6. Ps thank you for taking all this time

Knowlege is power, take someone who speaks the lingo to listen in and see if bull Marmite is detected. Bull Marmiteters can't help themselves, once they think the first bent truth has been accepted they keep right on going in my experience.

Hopefully, but not proved yet is it? I would get a local forum person to pop round for 1/2 hour and check the basics before going back to the garage.

    Any volunteers?

  11. That's the tricky thing - I went to this garage on recomendation...I don't know anyone local or any other vw specialist garages....

You need to go to Techenders.
A lot of so called specialists don't know their ass from their elbow (or at least they assume you don't).

Row might know a garage, she's Norwich way.

@oxiderenegade do you know of any reputable aircooled VW mechanics around Norwich?

Unfortunately East anglia seems to have more than it's fair share of dubious vw specialists.
