Oil light paying me a visit every so often....

  1. So... My oil light keeps popping on every so often, not all the time, but when it does, it's as I slow down, mainly after I've been going 'fast' (55mph ), when I'm in 1st gear and about to stop. It stays on as we stop for about 15seconds, then goes off.... It doesn't feel likes its gona stall and I've checked the oil levels which are fine.... Any advice?

  2. Start saving ..... :(

  3. Does it go straight out again when you rev the engine? If yes, your engine's probably got some life in it, but typically it's a sign of worn bearings (assuming the switch is ok). If it comes on when the engine's at revs, stop immediately.

The light indicates oil pressure, BTW, not oil level.

I had this problem last year, it's a very simple fix, you get a sticky plaster and stick it on the dash in such a way so you can't see the light flashing on and off,

    It c
It can mean low level especially when you've come down from high revs to low revs and your going round corners

If your bus has that crappy 30 weight oil in it, changing to something more suitable will probably solve it. It did on mine.

  10. Yes it goes out as soon as I rev ....yup if I was driving along and it came on id stop....what are worn bearings?

  11. I use Morris lubricant golden film sae 30 classic motor oil .... If I change to another type (recommendations welcome) do I need to drain the old stuff out and replace?

Can someone explain why the light comes on - if it's pressure, does that mean the pressures too high / low and what causes that? And what damage is it causing?

  12. The light is a low pressure warning light . When the light is on the pressure is below 6 psi , this will cause terminal damage . ( sorry )

  13. What causes low pressure? It's only popping on occasionally ...

  14. Looks like it's back to the garage we go

it means your engine is getting to the end of its days
sae 30 oil is a bit thin even for a good engine if you change to a thicker 20/50 oil it will help a old engine maintain its oil pressure

  16. worn oil pump, worn bearings , oil leaks , low oil level . It could be a dodgy oil pressure switch , or faulty wiring .

  17. Thanks guys, it's odd as the garage took the engine out a few months back and had a good look at it - even went so far as to say it was in good nick ... Let's hope it's a dodgy switch or wiring instead!

It's at least partially because 30 weight oil is too thin once up to temperature (hence why it's only after you've been driving it hardish for a few miles).
Don't panic the engines knackered, it's just as likely not to be imho.

  19. So 20/50 is the oil of choice not straight 30 ?

  20. Thank you, I'm not allowing myself to panic yet but it's always anxiety provoking when like me you don't understand!

It's odd that it only happens occasionally ... First time today was after about 5mins driving when I slowed at a roundabout from 30mph ...it was then fine for loads of roundabouts at same speed. Then drove at 55-60mph and after about 15mins it did it again as I slowed at a roundabout. Fine for the rest of the drive - another ten mins.
